Greenies Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 All this talk of bubbles. If the game would allow us to combine multiplayer with a dynamic campaign, then there would be a lot of bubbles "out there." One for each player, as a matter of fact. Sort of like a Bubble Mania. VapoR Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 All this talk of bubbles. If the game would allow us to combine multiplayer with a dynamic campaign, then there would be a lot of bubbles "out there." One for each player, as a matter of fact. Sort of like a Bubble Mania. Even better idea: have the dedicated server handle only the network traffic and the DC (no graphics, sound, etc). Each client would have their own bubble, and anything in it would be updated from the server (objects outside of it the client wouldn't need). A 24-7 dynamic war could occur this way, and all of us would be in sim bliss!! :D Of course, I'm not a programmer and don't know if this would even work lol.
olaleier Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 stuff Don't get me wrong, I'd would love to see a complex dynamic campaign. But why not focus the ideas around a reasonable project? Sure it's fun to dream about the biggest, baddest campaign ever, but it's still about a company that has to make a product, sell it and pay their employees.
Caretaker Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 That falcon4 can do it shows that using the right methodology it is possible. The changes needed on the AI control side of things isn't too difficult - using the same bubble method as falcon - two layers of AI - call them tactical and strategic. Even without creation of a dynamic campaign implementing such a system of AI control would very much improve the performance of the sim. I think the F4UT site or maybe some falcon forums have a detailed explanation of bubbles and how they work. Therefore the concept is already made, a practical implementation has been demonstrated. I don't think anybody denies that this is possible, but it's far from trivial. While the concept of a "bubble" system is easy to grasp, implementing it has a lot of consequences for various areas of the code like the track system or multiplayer. Also Falcon4 suffered consistency problems for years, where the same encounters outside of the bubble had quite different results to those within the bubble. Adjusting that takes a lot of time, as shown by Falcon4's evolution, or Rowan's BoB with a very similar approach. EECH ran without such a bubble, but in turn had various AI and campaign logic problems that didn't really help my immersion either. I'm with olaleier here - there's a lot of stuff I'd love to have in Lock On, but there is a certain reality about how the engine works that should be taken into account. Don't expect radical rewrites of core parts for an addon, that's just not gonna happen. That still doesn't exclude a dynamic campaign on the scope of Jane's LongbowII, which was much more limited than many other such systems (low number of units, small area, not in realtime), but had one feature that all the others lacked: it worked from day 1! :) If any DC will come out for Lock On it will definitely be similar to that one in many ways. Merlin Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Falcon 4 is alive and kicking after 7 years from its release! And its graphics sometimes are far from being photorealistic as in lockon. The reason why some people still prefer Falcon4 (and Falcon4 has a community that is several times that of Lomac)? A dynamic campaign where you feel involved like in a real(simulated) war, and the ability to fly in each and every aircraft that's been around in the last 40 years! Lockon has great graphics that make you feel you're flying the real thing, but as soon as you have something to do with your wingmen or other AI units you're called back to reality and you see you're flying in a game. You forgot to mention one 'little' detail: F4 had a leaked source code and basically community was able to do all sorts of things with it. Without this, I doubt F4 would last like, 7 years. your post has no bearing on what is being discussed here. Hopfully one day we can have a DC similar or better than falcons, I doubt that will ever happen though, not with in the next few years anyway, but we can always hope
werwolf Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 Could someone help me, from where can i download the original Su-27 campaig with low scene.
DayGlow Posted May 15, 2005 Posted May 15, 2005 I would disagree that F4 is a great DC. It is the ultimate continueous battle ground simulator. It simulates a whole war in real-time and is amazing, but it's actual stratigic engine is not that great. To have any effect you still need to closely monitor the PAK zones and mission types. Also the ATC still builds some very shakey flight paths, etc. People are still working very hard to try to fix these things, but I doubt they ever will.
