Hello all, I was wondering if this game installs Starforce protection?

If so, I wont be buying this game.

I fear this will become much more common, we have to pirate our own games just to actually play them without crashing and destroying our own computers.

What is Starforce protection?

Starforce installs as a hidden device driver, without the end-user's knowledge or consent.

The Starforce drivers are often linked to system instability and computer crashes. If these problems occur, the end-user would be unware as to the cause of the problem, and would be helpless to solve the problem.

under Windows XP, if packets are lost during the reading or writing of a disk, XP interprets this as an error and steps the IDE speed down. Eventually it will revert to 16bit compatibility mode rendering a CD/DVD writer virtually unusable. In some circumstances certain drives cannot cope with this mode and it results in physical hardware failure (Most commonly in multiformat CD/DVD writer drives). A sure sign of this step down occurring is that the burn speeds will get slower and slower (no matter what speed you select to burn at). Starforce, on a regular basis, triggers this silent step down. Until it reaches the latter stages most people do not even realise it is happening.

Last year, my work PC suddenly began blue-screening (crashing) any time I popped an audio CD into either of my two optical drives. I went online and learned that other people were having this problem and that it appeared to be StarForce-related.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

With the downloadable version, no starforce device drivers are installed to your computer.

Unfortunately, it runs Starforce.

You can read about the Starforce system here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarForce

If this game will be starforce free and published through Steam, I will buy it once more just to make sure I have this game forever without any retarded DRM.

My 2 cents..

You could also buy the actual downloadable version, d0ppler.

Even Steam will bother you with something. You won't get away satisfied ever, I guess.

I have bought the downloadable version, and why will a Steam version bother me? I have bought around 10 games over Steam wihtout any issues.

It's the number of installation limit that bothers me with the downloadable version.

Why on earth do you prejudice me?

What he's saying is steam has it's own brand of DRM. My understanding is that it has to check online everytime you play a steam game. If you don't have an internet connection, you won't be able to play the game. Personally I find this even more objectionable than even a limited activation/deactivation scheme because it means they are tracking everytime you play the game which I feel is an invasion of privacy.

my own opinion: I normally avoid games that limit the number of activations you can do but this is maybe the one game I'm willing to tolerate this in order to play the game. At least they do give you a large number of activations/deactivations with the downloadable version.

You don't need to be online in order to play a game you've bought from Steam.

Snake4000 was afraid of hidden starforce device drivers.

I replied to his post that no device drivers are installed with the Download version of black shark. Neither hidden nor unhidden.

His question should be answered already.

ED is thinking about a Steam release additional to the boxed and donwload version though. But it's not clear if that can be done.

Not that another useless starforce discussion is breaking out - all information provided :)

You said it all "Useless Starforce discussion."

If it has Starforce and you don't like it, don't buy it.

Quite simple really, and hearing people whine on and on (and on and on and on) about it is frustrating and pointless.

Great game; if Starforce scares you, you've missed out on a tremendous game.

Remember, on Nov. 4th, vote for Black Shark for President!!!
