Dangerzone Posted September 5, 2022 Posted September 5, 2022 I was just wondering if hell-fires should be able to take out small buildings. At present sometimes there are units that hide behind houses, etc - and I can't hit them with hellfire's. Multiple strikes on the building to destroy it so I can get LOS also doesn't appear to work and I was just wondering if this is by design / realistic - or whether we should be able to destroy buildings with a hellfire so we can hit what's behind it?
Poptart Posted September 5, 2022 Posted September 5, 2022 In real life it depends on the type of building. Hellfire uses a shaped charge that is intended to penetrate armor. A good portion of the explosive power of the missile goes to creating a molten jet of metal. It's not really a good choice to take down a building. I doubt it would ever be a tactical advantage to take down a building to get to an armored target behind it. Here is a building hit with three hellfires that is still standing: 1 1
Dangerzone Posted September 5, 2022 Author Posted September 5, 2022 Thanks for the clarification Poptart. I wasn't sure exaclty how they worked, but after seeing that - it makes sense for the building to remain. Cheers!
daemon1808 Posted September 5, 2022 Posted September 5, 2022 (edited) I don't know buldings but, as trees are indestructible in dcs, tanks are really hard to destroy in densed forest areas. I wonder if it is more realistic make missiles ignore trees than having 8 hellfires wasted in the same tree Edited September 5, 2022 by daemon1808 3
Mav87th Posted September 5, 2022 Posted September 5, 2022 (edited) Actually there are quite a few different kind of warheads for the hellfires. Also a variant mainly purposed against buildings and soft targets... Edited September 5, 2022 by Mav87th
Recluse Posted September 6, 2022 Posted September 6, 2022 A long time ago, I recall seeing pictures maybe in Aviation Week and Space Technology magazine...(i don't think it is video) of early Hellfire tests against a concrete bunker. My recollection was that the missile penetrated one wall and the high velocity molten copper jet blew out the far wall as well.
