SOLVED - flight stick in cockpit repeatedly resets to the center regardless of controller axis position if VR controller is used in cockpit

This issue started after the open beta v2.8 update.  It seems to happen after the left VR controller is used in the cockpit, but it may be triggered some other way.  If "Use VR controllers" is turned ON in the options, at some point the flight stick in the cockpit stops working, as if it is repeatedly getting a command to return to the center position.  Moving an axis on the flight stick (the controller) will begin to move the stick in the cockpit, but it immediately jerks back to the center position, negating the controller input.

This issue is repeatable, I've confirmed that "Use VR controllers" is the culprit and that switching VR controllers OFF in the options menu is a workaround.  Switching the "Use VR controllers" option OFF brings back normal stick behavior.  Switching "Use VR controllers" ON breaks the stick response as described above.  Sometimes it is bugged immediately, sometimes it is normal for a minute or two and then it is bugged, but the issue always happens with "Use VR controllers" ON.  Switching "Use VR controllers" OFF again returns normal stick operation again.  This issue is still present in the latest open beta version that was released today.

Good luck smashing this bug, I miss using my VR controllers in the cockpit!

I have been using OpenComposite for some time now.  I just switched to SteamVR and turned "Use VR controllers" ON and tested, and the issue still occurred - after a couple minutes the stick was jerking back to center and not responding properly, as described above.  I use an HP Reverb G2, in case that helps.

It turns out that the issue was caused by my VR controllers being "fixed", so they are now properly recognized as HP Reverb devices now.  Unfortunately, when this change was made, the "new" VR controller also included its own default control assignments.  Pitch and roll were mapped to the control sticks on the VR controllers, which obviously was counteracting my flight stick.  I cleared all the default VR controller assignments and the issue I reported is gone.

Just ran into this on my quest 2. Haven’t tried vr since 2.8.. odd thing is on mine if I’m in f2 view the stick functions normally, but as soon as its back in the cockpit, the stick starts re-centering.. Ill turn off controllers, or try un-mapping the axis on the vr controller sticks.

Thanks so much for giving me the answer to this one - I was gutted to finally have it all working and then have it break.  Oddly it was working with VR handles and HOTAS for a day or two (new HOTAS setup) and then failed after a DCS update.

I'd really like to get to the bottom of this - I hate not having my VR handles to operate everything in the F18 cockpit - I really want it working the way it was before.

Not sure how to do this though - can't find any settings for Quest 2 VR setup.  It is very clear that the VR joysticks didn't use to work - I tried may times.  I wonder if DCS update the controllers to allow joystick use, which wrecked my system.

So - any help recombining VR with HOTAS gratefully appreciated!!

The key, like with all other controllers I've found, is to click the top button for the controller and then click "Clear Categories", to clear out all default control assignments.  The default assignments often make very little sense, will be duplicated across different control types, and will only cause problems.

Once that is done, remap all your axis controls, and tune them how you like with curves and such.  Then map other HOTAS buttons as needed.

Enabling use of the VR controllers is one of the VR options menu settings - mine is set to only function when the grip buttons are held.  I also disabled interaction with the stick and throttle so my VR controllers cannot accidentally move them.  Those are checkboxes in the VR settings also.

Glad my experience helped some others!  Feel free to reach out if you have questions.
