Hi,

I may finally have soon enough cash to upgrade my GPU. I’ll probably have the choice between a 3060Ti and a RX6700XT, maybe a 6750XT with some luck.

The things is, my headset is a Pimax 5k super. I read some negative comments about the Pimax/AMD combination regarding compatibility, performance in DCS and image quality. I would welcome some advice.

Thank you in advance!

I had a 5k Super along with an AMD 6900XT.  It was running good but even with the fast GPU, image quality had to be scaled down quite a bit.  Using reprojection (pimax) was very smooth but the ghosting was too much for me.  Problem with the 5k Super is the minimum refresh rate at 90 hz.  Exceeding 90 FPS in VR is very difficult unless you have a top GPU, the only alternative you have is to use reprojection.

This is very dependent on your tolerance to ghosting in reprojection.

Also note that SteamVR motion smoothing does not work with AMD cards, you have to use PiTool (smart/compulsive smoothing) instead.  OpenXR does not work as well with AMD as with nvidia which is sad as it gives a nice boost in performance.  The 6000 series are very good cards, but not for VR.  AMD is way behind on VR support.

My advice is save more or look at the used market and try to get at least a 3080.   DCS VR is very GPU power hungry.

Thanks for replying.

A 3080 is unfortunately not an option. It will be either one of the cards above, or dropping DCS for another hobby.

I don’t really need 90 fps, I can live with the ‘compulsive’ 45 Hz and the ghosting that goes with it.

Do you think that a 6700xt + steamVR would be worse, or better, than a 3060ti + openXR ?

You know with a good CPU and the 3060Ti combined with open XR I reckon you would get perfectly good performance. Plus there are supposed to be big improvements to DCS/CPU performance on the way. Another thing is don't go mad choosing a headset with super high res. The problem with super high res is that once you've seen it, it's hard not to have it! So don't let yourself see it!

Thank you for your reply. And what on the AMD side, would you say, is the model that provides at least the same performance, image quality and stability as a RTX3060ti with openXR? RX 6700? 6700XT? 6750XT? 6800? If nobody knows, I’ll go with the 3060Ti.

I already have the headset (Pimax 5k, see above) and indeed, I traded resolution for FOV (my personal preference). It does work with my gtx 1060, but not very well.
