I'm starting to make the simpit for the upcoming Flogger. I have access to an autocad, a 3d printer and help of my professors at uni. They got quite interested in my project. First problem that I have is the lack of any flogger cocpit blueprints that I know of. I have no idea how to get dimensions. Eyeballing or scaling everything is a nightmare. Any ideas on where to look for cocpit dimensions or manuals that will have at least an accurate cockpit blueprint so I can scale more accurately? Photos are no go, because they go well for a single instrument/panel, but for the whole cockpit it is a no-go.

ETA - you're a Brit? You should talk to Newark air museum. They're great and they do make cockpits accessible on most of their exhibits. I don't know what state the Mig23's cockpit is in but talk to them. If it's mostly complete then ask if you can get access to it to take pics and measurements on a quiet day.

No I'm from Poland, we have some air museums but closest one that have MiG-23 is app. 500 km away so It would take me a long time till I can go there. Also our musems are not much into letting peoples into cocpits. I know about this 3d model, but I cant download it, so it's only for refference, It would be very usefull to get details that are not in technical documentation, but without it it's still all eyeballing.

If you're close to Wroclaw, there are cheap flights from there to East Midlands Airport which is very close to NAM.

So it begins. I've managed to get a ton of technical exploitation books for couple mig-23 versions, including MLA, but sadly no technical drawings of the cockpit. Nontheless what I've got are schematics of cockpits and dimensions of a couple of instruments, which can give me what I need. It is much harder than with technical drawings but using scaling of schematics I can get this done. So far I have designed one panel, speedometer and radio alitmeter. This will be a long way, but it will be worth it. Given that I will not burn out in the middle 😜

Remember that most, if not all, of our cockpits are 'stand off' replicas, which means they are always - in some way or another - factually incorrect. This is not for any other reason that in most cases we have to accept the limitations of what is possible with the means, technology, resources and time at our disposal.

You make this to suit your needs, and if a panel is 5mm to small, or the button shape is wrong, or it doesn't work... well as long as you are happy with it it won't matter. We will be very happy to see how you get on and help in any way we can, plus enjoy seeing what you make.

I wish I could make another rig, either MiG 21 or 23, but I think my wife would kill me, so I will watch your build with interest and not a little envy!

@lesthegrngo @Vinc_Vega  Thanks for support guys, it will help a lot. You received me so well, that I fell bad that I haven't posted any pics from the project. So There they are. So far There Is US-1600K speedometer, UISMIK altimeter, and empty space is for a BDI-30K altimeter, but I can't figure out so far how to design it. All will be running on arudrinos, but as long as I don't have complete panel I will not bother with that, at least until lights will be designed. Here are my cad design and pic from parts catalog of 23 MLA. Now I will try to figure out how to make BDI-30K and search for a lights, because they are named as "Lights" of different types in manual and I can't find them on internet. 

Also I plan to add metal sheet on top of printed base that you can see, 1-2mm thick to cover sides and for more authentic "fell" of my panels/

Btw, do you fell like it's a good thing to post how every element is made, exact designs of all instruments? I've planed to post full technical documentation after the project is complete, but I can also do WIP posts, posted with much smaller updates.

Small update.

I've mostly completed this panel. Barometric alitmeter and  SLM-61  are still not present. I'll not design SLM lights, becouse they are still av. on market and quite cheap. So new additions are:

SW-1 (or CB-1) post lights.

Illuminated plate with texts, and exterlnal scale for radio altimeter. Whole panel looks like this right now. Now, that I've completed some elements that are shared between many instruments and panels, I hope that work will speed up a little.

US-1600K ASI is fully complete. There will be also a plate with motor drivers on top of a motors plate, but that is very simple part, so no need to show it in instrument assembly. Grey wheel on the back is for speed indication in thousands. Motors are  28BYJ stepper motors. 

Btw. Do you think that gears of red and grey wheels match good enough?

So, I started from scratch, with new better quality photos and much more experience. Some things will remain, but most of what I had designed, is to be redone. But work goes fast this time, and soon there will be more parts, this time as real objects...

Design of front left panel is completed as well as one and two dial instruments. The only thing that is stopping me from making it real is that I lost access to my 3d printer, so it will have to wait a little bit longer. I figured out the mechanical part of this design, now is the time for some electrical, and here I must ask for some help. My only experience in electrical is that i changed light bulbs few times . Every stepper motor has its driver incorporated into the design of the instruments. I plan on running everything on ardurinos, and here is my first question. How to manage that? How many ardurino boards can be connected to a computer, how to managed all that? Maybe best solution would be to get some knowladge on custom PCB design and making? Any help would be greatly appreciated. 

I'm also including a blueprint of US-1600K altimeter as a reference.

I thought I'd share final design of US-1600K ( essentially all one and 2 dial instruments will be the same, with different digit plates ), mechanical principle stays the same, just made design more elegant and practical.

Work slowed down, becouse I'm on my last year at uni, so have a ton of other work. Right now I'm designing KPP, NPP is next, and then all instruments would be ready. Also need to figure out wheter I'm going to mount panels to pit structure like in MIG, or like in other simpits. But yeah, project still going. Made some basic models for flight stick, and friend helped me with gas handle.

A lot of things have to be finished yet, even more have to be refined, but finally it starts to feel like I'm getting somewhere. I said to myself over a year ago, that if I can design front panels, I can make this pit happen, and despite current situation with RAZBAM and ED, my work continues. Finally I fell like this project can and will be done.
