msalama Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Hiya! I'm using the Radeon at the moment, but which card would actually be better for DCS:BS IYO? There're games such as IL-2 that kind of run better on NVidia cards, but how about Black Shark? I'm asking because I don't want to go through the pain of switching and tweaking cards and drivers for no apparent gain. So which one would you use in my place? I'm only playing BS at the moment so there's no need of taking any other games or apps into account... PS. Both cards are a bit dated, I know, but purchasing a 512MB card is not an option ATM so I'll just have to make do with these 2 for now :noexpression: The DCS Mi-8MTV2. diveplane Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 (edited) cant go wrong with nvidia cards imo, your card youll have to run everything on low though. even at that you might get poor performance. my card is a 9800GTXOC fairly good performance. for dcs you really need a nvidia 8800 card or above. msalama Posted February 5, 2009 Author Posted February 5, 2009 Thanks for your opinions Diveplane. Yeah, I actually ended up changing the cards just to see whether the NVidia runs the Shark better, and happily enough this is exactly what it seems to do! Less microstuttering there now if I'm anyone to judge, and this before doing any tweaking whatsoever... S! The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.

EtherealN Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I have a newly purchased 9800GTX+ and can say that I have only good experience of it in DCS:BS. However, I have only ever owned a single Radeon card and that was a low-rate laptop gizmo, so I cannot compare. But for the ~1800SEK (including 25% sales tax) or ~225 dollars US I have been able to ascertain that the one limiter I have with DCS:BS is the CPU. Cheap enough card and running on a 45nm manufacturing process it does use a bit less power even though independent tests of that have varied from like a measly 4% all the way to 20% power savings. msalama Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 (edited) Much better with the NVidia now that I've tweaked her a bit: Looks great - well within limitations one has to put up anyway with c**ppy stuff like mine I mean - and gives me a constant 20+ FPS too now even when things get crowded! Also, no microstuttering whatsoever anymore... and thus this being Friday and everything what I'll do later is this:  Cheers guys! Edited February 6, 2009 by msalama The DCS Mi-8MTV2. Krippz Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 If I we're on a budget I would opt for the Radeon 4830. Better performance than a 9800 at a cheaper price. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 64th "Scorpions" Aggressor Squadron Discord: 64th Aggressor Squadron TS: 195.201.110.22
EtherealN Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Does the 4830 support crossfire? When building budget systems that capability does offer some nice versatility in future upgrades. Though I myself is already commited to nVidia on this machine, since I also got an nForce 780i mainboard, but it might still be nice to know since I do have another machine sitting bare in the other room.
