I am contemplating transitioning to VR for my flight simulation, but prior to doing so, I am thinking of using my wired Xbox controller to configure my Su-27 plane, in 2D, and test it out. Despite having a complete HOTAS setup, I am apprehensive about using it while in VR and potentially fumbling around.

Is it practical to fly with a gamepad controller in VR? With the bumper switches as modifier keys, I believe that most plane functionalities can be accessed.

I would appreciate any additional insights or advice you might have on this topic.  😎

You may use it for flight control ... but experince is not on par with your Orion2 at all. 🙂

When you have a VR headset, it normally comes with controllers.

And after I tried DCS/MSFS2020 in VR 3 yrs ago, I never went back to flat screen for serious fly. Coz it likes real flight in cockpit in that way but looking at a piece of glass in front of you even it could be a 85" OLED TV.

If you already have a HOTAS setup anyway, I would just continue to use that. You will soon learn where all your buttons and switches are using muscle memory and feel. I think you will find it much more immersive for VR.

Thank you everyone for your valuable input, it is greatly appreciated.

I recently began watching Tuuvas (https://www.youtube.com/@Tuuvas, he's an ED Beta Tester) and noticed that despite having a full HOTAS setup, he uses a controller for ease of use. This led me to consider the idea that using a controller while flying with VR could aid in muscle memory. Given that many of us have extensive experience with controllers throughout our gaming journeys, holding an Xbox controller while flying would feel familiar and natural.

Thanks again!
