  1. This new video talks about Competitive Matchmaking and for me, it could be a fun way to fly, all the time. I have raced on iRacing for years, and though it has some downsides related to your iRating and safety rating, this could be a fun way to be matched up with other players that have a similar skill set. I'm sure this has come up before, so I am just starting a new thread for this topic. Here's the video:
  2. Or just use a really long runway? The time starts when the plane leaves the runway, correct? I'm not sure if DCS has any really long runways like RL. Consider messing with the air pressure for your session too (QNH)? (lower is faster) If the Reno airport (RNO) is in the Nevada map it has long runways plus is at 4,300 feet elevation. Wink wink, nudge, nudge... Don't ask me about the Bridge of Death...
  3. Cap did just release a new video describing his HOTAS setup on the F-15E.
  4. I agree with you on that. I do enjoy his videos. He is currently doing a good job of showing us some of the basics of the F-15E, which I do appreciate. I just wish he showed us his interface techniques. That’s it!
  5. Certainly, why not? Since he is monetizing his videos, it would be appropriate for him to dedicate some time to answering "additional" questions. I took the effort to formulate my questions in a thoughtful, intelligent manner, expressing my admiration. Have you observed the recent emphasis he has placed on promoting DCS over the past few months? It seems reminiscent of how a paid representative would promote a product, particularly DCS. It appears that his motivations are not purely driven by altruism. I acknowledge that this is merely my personal viewpoint, and I don't intend to provoke any conflicts. Being a celebrity can be challenging. However, with fame often comes financial gain, and if the circumstances become overwhelming, it's reasonable to step away from it, in my humble opinion.
  6. I found GR's insights on configuring our inputs (HOTAS) quite valuable. However, the videos featuring his older Logitech HOTAS need to be updated since they are now four years old. I'm curious about his current workflow and how he manages his setup(s) of multiple planes. I appreciate watching GS's videos because of their high quality. However, when I reached out to him for help in understanding his workflow and HOTAS setup, he disregarded my requests. Personally, I struggle the most with comprehending the inputs and how to properly configure them in DCS (using different planes too). It appears to me that GS relies heavily on his keyboard in addition to his HOTAS, which confuses me. I genuinely wish I could grasp the whole concept better. Trade secrets for his success at being such a good sim pilot? Maybe... Has anyone else noticed how similar GS is to Empty Box? Empty Box has been making iRacing videos for years. Empty Box YouTube Videos
  7. The video below talks about the current status of the missiles on the Su-27. Is what the author saying in this video correct, as of 05/13/2023? His statement saying that we should be flying NATO planes now instead of the Su-27 concerns me. The video:
  8. Does the current In-game Barometric Pressure (plus Dew Point) have anything to do with the vapor, and the game is using that when it decides if, or how much to display? I have never read up on vapor being created by jets. But, it sure is cool! This scene in TG-Maverick was priceless!
  9. Thank you everyone for your valuable input, it is greatly appreciated. I recently began watching Tuuvas (https://www.youtube.com/@Tuuvas, he's an ED Beta Tester) and noticed that despite having a full HOTAS setup, he uses a controller for ease of use. This led me to consider the idea that using a controller while flying with VR could aid in muscle memory. Given that many of us have extensive experience with controllers throughout our gaming journeys, holding an Xbox controller while flying would feel familiar and natural. Thanks again!
  10. I am contemplating transitioning to VR for my flight simulation, but prior to doing so, I am thinking of using my wired Xbox controller to configure my Su-27 plane, in 2D, and test it out. Despite having a complete HOTAS setup, I am apprehensive about using it while in VR and potentially fumbling around. Is it practical to fly with a gamepad controller in VR? With the bumper switches as modifier keys, I believe that most plane functionalities can be accessed. I would appreciate any additional insights or advice you might have on this topic. null
  11. Thanks for your simple and effective solution, Sr. However, I believe the in-house solution provided by Varjo only requires you to focus on the control, which positions the cursor above the cockpit control, and then you can simply use the leg-mounted knob or switch by clicking or scrolling. This means that you can keep your hands on the throttle and joystick for as long as possible while flying, and only need to interact with the cockpit when necessary, allowing you to fly hands-free. Your solution does not include a scrolling knob similar to the ones used in real-life planes.
  12. I recently watched a video featuring the Varjo XR-3 and noticed that VR Flight Sim Guy was using an "Varjo, in-house switching system" strapped to his leg. Intrigued, I contacted Varjo Support to inquire about its availability for public release. The device seems like an excellent alternative to using a mouse or keyboard while flying in VR, as it remains securely strapped to the user's leg. Unfortunately, Varjo currently has no plans to make it available to the public. I am curious to hear your thoughts on this switching system and whether there are similar options available. Do you believe it would be a valuable addition for most VR flight sim users? I am considering getting the Varjo XR-3 in the near future. I let Varjo know that I would be creating a post here for them to follow our responses. Flight Sim Guy talks about the switch system here in this YT video. He comments how intuitive it is to use: https://youtu.be/DFG4U5pxkuQ?t=106 null
  13. I queried ChatGPT for DCS Windows Pagefile settings and this is the reply that I got: Is this correct? I have not messed with my pagefile size, yet. I have 32GB installed. I did notice a couple stutters here and there while playing MP, on a server that had a ping of 32.
  14. An extension is available for both Google and Brave browsers that allows the ChatGPT response to be displayed simultaneously with Google's reply, making it a useful tool to have for queries like this. Me: Total lifting area of the Su-27 ChatGPT: I'm sorry, but I cannot provide the total lifting area of the Su-27 as it is not a well-defined term in aircraft design. However, the Su-27 is a Russian fighter jet that was designed and built by Sukhoi. It has a wingspan of 14.7 meters (48.2 feet) and a wing area of 62 square meters (667 square feet). The specific lifting area of an aircraft can vary depending on the design and configuration of the wings, and is typically measured in square meters or square feet.
  15. Here's another cool ChatGPT tidbit I just tried. I asked ChatGPT: "Can you write some mission code for DCS that pits me against 5 enemy F-15C? I am flying the Su-27. I will load this and see what happens.
  16. I'm still new to DCS (and you know that!). Is this how you do a "slow repair" in DCS? I got this from ChatGPT: 1. First, land your aircraft on a runway or taxi it to a parking spot. 2. Once your aircraft is stationary, press the "Left Alt + J" key combination to shut down the engines and turn off all the systems. 3. Next, press the "Right Shift + R" key combination to open the repair and rearm menu. 4. In the menu, select "Slow Repair" and wait for the repair process to complete. 5. Once the repair is finished, you can rearm your aircraft if necessary by selecting the desired weapons and stores in the menu and clicking "Rearm."
  17. I'm a new user. I really wish that "Create Fast Mission" would add AWAC's automatically to the missions, but as far as I can tell, it does not. So, I thought ChatGPT could help answer my question: How do you create an A/A mission in DCS with AWACs? ChatGPT's direct reply: Now, I know that it pulled this response from a webpage somewhere (probably from the DCS forum), but the grammatical response is perfect! It appears to have read the webpage then converted it into a perfectly written response in English. There are things missing from it (different settings per line item), but it gave me the "jist" of how to create a simple mission like I requested. Interesting response that it gave, in that, it's response works better than the "Search" field of the forum... Need start-up procedures for a plane? ChatGPT it. Have questions about the targeting modes of a plane explained? ChatGPT it. No flaming, please! I just thought that this could be a good tool for new users to explore while they learn the craft. At some point, I bet that an API call could be run directly run from DCS World to get a response from ChatGPT based upon a users query and we wouldn't even need to leave DCS for questions. I'm just blue-skying this... But something like this will eventually happen. "Sompin" to think about.
  18. I'm using a 65" TV and the radio messages up at the top/left are to hard to read. This fix is a great solution. Thanks! Question: Is it possible to make these lua files have the file rights set to read-only / write-deny? I'm not sure if subsequent DCS updates would choke. Just a thought I had. ***Update: That's a bad idea! Ignore that sentence. Move along, nothing to see here...
  19. Noticing in your image you show above, that the "--high" resolution is different in the two files. 4096 vs 8192. I have not played with that file (or have any experience with it) to see if it makes any difference but it might. Maybe a typo in the default section?
  20. Should this be under the: Home\English\Digital Combat Simulator\DCS World 2.8\Bugs and Problem\Multi-Threading Bug Reports (Temp) thread? I'm sure BigNewy and team will get all over this when they see the HDD image you supplied.
  21. I'm the noob so take everything I say, and just ignore it. Give me a year and I might just catch on. Biff Tannen: I can't believe you'd loan me your car without telling me it had a blind spot. I could've been killed! Or Biff Tannen: Since you're new here, I'm gonna cut you a break; today. So, why don't you make like a tree and get outta here? Speed up:
  22. I used to live in Reno Nevada where there is always bad turbulent winds at the airfield. The pilots purposely flew in quickly there to help with lateral winds pushing us around, so I totally understand coming in quick with the Su-27. IRL, I have boltered three times in Reno due to bad winds over the years. Seeing that it is an unstable aircraft I bet ED had to make the decision: fly unstable or allow the ACS to fly it for you. I pick unstable! It is fun to fly in the hills.
  23. If you were running Tacview and the simulator at the same time, I would think that the second GPU could drive the secondary monitor. This would keep the resources at 100% for the main GPU. I'm just throwing something out there. I have a second monitor just sitting around collecting dust, and was wondering what it would be like to have Tacview setup to the side in "live" mode. I was able to drive two monitors (4K) using MSFS and it worked just fine with just one GPU. Granted it was running at ~30 FPS, but who cares over there. It was smooth enough to get the job done. I used the HDMI output from the mother board to drive the secondary monitor and never had any issues.
  24. Your edit and assessment of the ACS is spot on. I will continue playing around with it. After I am done flying in the hills and shooting at bad-guys I just wanted to engage RTN mode, relax for a bit until "final" then hand stick it onto the runway. This system doesn't lend itself (IMHO) to flying in bad conditions using ILS to right above the runway. The last thing I would want, is to be distracted by a system that starts porpoising or experiencing bad AOA in the last few seconds in bad weather conditions. Thankfully, the Navigation mark and ILS Deviation marks work great to get us down in one piece. Thanks for your insights and advice about speeds at landing time. I will follow those suggestions to the "T"!
  25. Here is my "adapted" iRacing to DCS rig. The shifting in iRacing started to kill my hands (paddle shifting), so it was time to give up that hobby. DCS is the next step upwards! The new Porsche Mission R electric GT racing car didn't require shifting, but Man is it weird not having to shift. After ten years of doing laps I was able to get that out of my system.
