Janman Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Hello all, I'de like to convert a 22" wide monitor into a touchscreen. Does anyone here have any experience with add-on touch screen panels? In particular, I'm wondering if there are any brands to avoid?, What combination of monitor & panel worked for you? Got any tips or pit-falls to watch out for?... My target monitor is a Samsung 2253bw and I'm in Canada ;) Thanks for your time, J
GregP Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 I bought one off of eBay from a company called "easyworldwidetrading" in Hong Kong. From what I've seen, the ones they sell are for non-widescreens; I bought a 17" version which I used on an HP L1710 LCD. Installation was easy once I figured out how to pop the bezel off the LCD (just slid a screwdriver under the side of it and worked my way around the periphery). Once the bezel's off, you just lay the touchscreen on top, put the bezel back on (it does tend to bulge the bezel outward a bit, but mine still snapped back into place), hook up the USB cable and run the calibration utility on the enclosed CD. For $190 total, it cost less than the 7" Mimo touchscreen I'd been thinking about buying before that.
thereminqblank Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Widescreen touchscreen conversion kits are really hard to find. A lot of places only sell them in 32" size or above. "Unholy Roller" [sIGPIC]http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/images/userbars/A-10C_UserBar_01.gif[/sIGPIC]
Alex_rcpilot Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I just found some local retailers who have 22" widescreen touchpanels. The panel + USB interface are sold at 72 bucks altogether. I'm not sure of the quality, maybe I will buy a 17" setup for my current monitor and test it for a while before giving you further information. But that's supposed to take long. Touch panels are diversified, with resistive panels being the most commonly used type because of their low cost. ITO quality is the major concern regarding this type of panels. Over time the oxide electrodes degradate and non-linearity grows. When the time comes, calibration won't help you any more. The good news is such occasion is rarely seen.
