My Workaround for exported MDF brightnes issues

Recommended Posts

I export the MFDs and other things to a secondary screen and as most of you know there is a brightness issue with that in some modules.

So i played around a bit and build me a solution with reshade.

Please change path settings to ones matching your installation

  • First setup all your exports as desired (well documented here)
  • Make a screenshot of your DCS setup while running your desired module
    image.pngnull
  • Use your favorite image editing tool (GIMP, Photoshop, Whatever) and make a "Mask" out of it where screen areas that are not to be touched made white and screen areas that are too dark are black. (You could also use greyscales to sligtly lighten up areas in relation to full white areas)
    image.png
  • Install reshade into the C:\Enullagle Dynamics\DCS World Beta\bin-mt folder
  • Save the mask as UIMask.png into  C:\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World Beta\bin-mt\reshade-shaders\Textures folder
  • Start DCS, load a mission with your desired module and open the reshade interface (Default: Pos1, look at DCS start to your upper screen corner)
  • Enable the Filters "UIMask_Top", "Tonemap", "UIMask_Bottom" and arrange them like seen below
  • Change the Gamma setting in the Tonemap Filter to reach desired brightness on the MFDssettings.jpg
  • Enjoy

How does one get this to work for different modules, or multi-place aircraft (F-15E front has 3 MFDs, back has 4)

I'd say only through different UIMask files sadly. But curious if someone finds another way.

It actually works, based on how I have my MPD/MPCD monitors placed in windows

I did this using helios, took one big screenshot while dcs was running ( so it showed the viewports) , colored the whole dcs screen white and the whole lower part, where the helios monitor is, black. Helios ( I know this isn’t the discussion) always places the aircraft virtual  cockpit on top of everything else running, so it only affects the viewports rendered behind the cockpit. Works like a charm on all aircraft. I would say just play with the masks. Wherever it’s black, reshade will apply the chosen filters wherever it’s white, it wont. Having all the monitors in a line in windows probably takes some pain away.

sorry @idenwen( the world thanks you for figuring this out btw!) , meant to reply to @Darkdiz

1st pic , is without the reshade mask, my f-15e profile, with lighting set in night mode.. screens basically invisible..(in person you can barely make them out) the 2nd is the same settings  but with the reshade mask running Then A-10c at night, in night mode also. World of difference! ( I added a Levels filter too along with tone map to get a little more tweaking)
