I'm trying to understand CDIP and this part of the manual makes no sense to me:

Quote

CDIP Attack Phase

The DIL is provided to aid the pilot in flying a course line projected through the
target. This is accomplished when the target appears to be moving down the DIL
toward the center of the sight reticle. When the target is in the center of the sight
reticle, the pilot presses the pickle button to obtain immediate weapon release. The
radar antenna and the FLIR are slaved to the sight reticle to provide a continuous
display of the slant range to the impact point. If a ripple release is programmed, the
sight reticle LOS is for the center of the bomb pattern on target.

If the pilot presses the button earlier, ie. at the moment the pipper crosses the target,
AUTO display is initialized. Target becomes designated and the TD box appears on
the HUD. The system then begins to operate the same as AUTO mode - it computes
and displays TREL and ASL, and the pilot retains weapon release steering in the
event multiple weapons are being released.

What the heck is this supposed to mean?  How is pressing the button at the 'moment the pipper crosses the target' earlier than when the target is in the center of the sight reticle?  That's not early, that's right on time, no?

When your bomb impact point is below the HUD in several aircraft, from the F-16 to the Su-25T, the pipper for the bomb is still shown at the bottom. Pressing and holding the pickle button in those jets designates the point as your intended impact point in a CCRP-type mode, with appropriate symbology to aid release.

I'd wager that's what is meant, where the pipper is at the bottom of the guy's, but doesn't actually correspond to where bomb impact point would be (and would be such a case where the 'pipper' and 'sight reticle' may not be the same thing, or at least pointing to the same place).

It's similar to the automatic transition to CCRP/AUTO from CCIP in other aircraft.

If the actual bombs impact point is below the HUD (as you are too high and too far from the target), then the aiming cue is drawn at the bottom of the HUD. When you put that cue on the target and press weapon release button, then the system will designate that point and switch to AUTO/CCRP to guide you to the bombs release point.

Hardware: VPForce Rhino, FSSB R3 Ultra, Virpil WarBRD, Hotas Warthog, Winwing F15EX, Slaw Rudder, GVL224 Trio Throttle, Thrustmaster MFDs, Saitek Trim wheel, Trackir 5, Quest Pro

Thanks guys, I figured the use was similar to other aircraft like other aircraft, but the verbiage in the manual utterly confuses me.

In almost every other aircraft I can think of, when the CCIP pipper is physically below the HUD, there is some indication that the pipper on the HUD is 'virtual'.  Like the half-pipper in the Warthog or the reflected cue line in the Hornet.  As far as I can tell, there's not any indication in the F-15E as to whether the pipper is correct or 'virtual.'

If you have a TREL indication at the bottom right of the HUD while you have a target designated then that means the pipper is not showing the impact point, yet. Once TREL dissappears, you'll notice the pipper move up from the bottom of the HUD.

Aaaah, that goes along with the trend of only having numeric indications for stuff (like AOA), thanks!
