I just bought a new PowerColor 7900xtx hellhound as an upgrade from a 6900xt. I’m using this with a 5800x3d cpu and pc is coupled with Ethernet to a mesh node ensuring fast internet.

just to balance a bit of the debate online about the 7900xtx I thought I’d give my experience so far. I’m not denying at all there have been problems but for me it’s working really well. I installed it yesterday. Downloaded the latest amd preview driver for adrenaline and tested in dcs and MSFS with my g2.
Dcs f18 low level caucuses with all dcs settings maxed except msaa. OpenXRdt set to 100%, openXR toolkit 90%. No overclock yet but basically all adrenaline settings default except Chill mode set to 45 fps max and min to keep the fps from jumping.

Straight away I got a significant performance boost. Without chill it’s holding 65-75 fps and at low level gpu times around 11-13 ms. This can be a little choppy at times as fps goes up and down so I activate chill and it’s super smooth, even looking out the side in the valleys at the trees. No stutters or jitters at all. Even when using the tpod and targets blazing it’s totally stable. The vram barely gets over 40%. I haven’t experimented with overclock yet. My 6900xt had a decent overclock to almost 2600mhz but so far I don’t seem to really need it. Although I will play around later and see what I can get. Additionally the gpu is super quiet and much cooler running than 6900 and I have zero coil whine. If I dropped the shadows a bit I’m pretty sure I can get close to 90fps in most situations if I wanted but I really do like the nice visuals of all the bells and whistles from dcs.

Theres probably a load of other things I did over the last year tuning my pc but nothing very complicated. Minimizing anything in windows home and having an empty windows room helps. Mt and openXR also has been a really good improvement. All in all I’m really impressed and despite being initially hesitant due to a lot of the comments and reviews I’ve read online I’m very happy.

Update - I managed to hit the nirvana of 90fps in a g2 by reducing shadows a bit. Silky smooth. However would drop a bit lookin out the side at very low level.

I now found that just using openxr toolkit and throttling fps to 60, I can use all the shadows and the fps never drops. Latencies on gpu around 9ms. Very very nice indeed. This is far better than i was expecting.

From the settings you are depicting I assume you are not using motion smoothing/reprojection. Could you try it just to see how it works with these cards.
With previous ones it was really not syncing

Correct. No motion reprojection. I never liked it on any cards, not even on my 3080. This was fine when using steamVR but in wmr generally horrible in my experience. I definitely do not need it anyway. Everything is already so smooth MR would not bring anything to the party.

Lucky you... without MR (ASW in my case) I cannot have a Good VR experience. As anything below my headset refresh rate is unpleasant for me, and having 80fps all the time (I have the pro at 80hz) is not possible with my system (5800x3d, 3090)
I would like to try the 7900xtx but if AMD didn't do anything to sync frames for MR it won't be good for me.

Are u using openxr? If so, try without MR and use the openxr toolkit to throttle your frames to half your refresh rate. This may produce much smoother results and u won't suffer the loss from MR. Certainly always worked for me.

I tried everything trust me...
But I know that there are some people who can stand without reprojection with the frames going freely or locked in and others that cannot. I am the second kind I guess.
Also I don't use the toolkit anymore as with the quest pro there is another app from mbucchia for the foveated rendering

Fair enough. I actually used to use mr all the time. Couldn't have envisioned not using it, especially whenninused nvidia cards. However I never liked the mushier image it produced. I liked the smoothness though. Through more tuning I found I got at least the same smoothness but with the sharper, clearer image. I tested recently mr on my amd setup in msfs and it worked as it should but locking the frames was just as good for me. I do think however in dcs there is something in wmr that just doesn't work as well as steam for mr. May well be different with the quest however. That I can now get high fps with high graphics settings and locked fps totally negates the need for mr.
