Mk1_Trebuchet Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 I good friend of mine tried out my rig and now has the bug to get into DCS, specifically with VR... so now I'm trying to put together a build for him. I'm running a Reverb G2 on a 4090... but I'm having a really hard time justifying having him spend $1800+ on a 4090... but I know if I have him drop to a 4070 series, he'll very likely be disappointed in the relative performance. That leaves the 4080, but I still think the 4080 is overpriced for the performance and specs... Just wanted to see if anyone had experience with the 7900xtx now that the drivers are more mature, and MT is getting ironed out. (I'd be giving him my old Quest 2 to get started) thanks! Dogmanbird Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 I'm keen to hear some experiences too. They seem to be few and far between among sim users
Tomcat388th Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 I'm running a 6700xt which is no comparison to any of the cards you listed but I have been very pleased with the performance/visuals I'm getting with my Quest 2 and the latest AMD drivers. I know AMD had some issues with the 7 series drivers but I think they're finally getting them ironed out. My system is in my signature I'm using an asus b550 prime plus motherboard. j 1 Ryzen7 5800X3D. 64 gb ram, 6950XT 16gb, Winwing Orion F18, MFG Crosswind Rudder, 42 inch lg tv, Quest PRO USN VF31 F14A AE2 1985-1989 CV 59 NAS Oceana IL ANG 183FW/170FS F16C Block 30 Big Mouth 1989-2006 Full time tech Retired E8
CptBligh Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 @TED has one I believe. My 6900XT has worked well. I bought it January 2022 when I couldn't find any geforce cards in stock that weren't scalper prices. MSI Z690 Edge | 12700k | 64GB DDR4 3200 | RTX 4080 Super | Varjo Aero
Pyrocumulous Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 Before switching to the RTX 4090, I used a Radeon RX 6800XT. No real complaints, and it can handle Reverb G2 resolutions at a reasonable frame rate, and the RTX 4090 is definitely more than is needed for the Reverb. Radeon RX 6950XT is pretty excellent bang for you buck at this point. That said, there are some good reasons that nearly all VR is on nVidia GPUs. Radeon doesn't support foveated rendering at this time, and that would be a no-go for me if specifically building for VR. Lack of VRSS support means that at this time Radeon is not compatible with Varjo headsets, and hasn't been compatible with Pimax. I believe DLSS is on the roadmap for DCS World, which also is Nvidia-only. Another option to consider is RTX 3090 ti, particularly on the used market. 1 1 Warthog HOTAS, Warthog Throttle, TPR pedals, Magic Trackpad 2, Kensington Slimblade Pro, Behringer X-Touch Mini, Pimax Crystal, RTX 4090 FE, Asus ProArt X670E-Creator, Ryzen 7950X3D, 64gb DDR5.
wormeaten Posted August 6, 2023 Posted August 6, 2023 If you talking about best performances for less money R5 7600X and RX 7900XTX is the way to go. All previous bugs look's like is fixed so this is most performances you can get per $. BTW I got 3080 so I'm not AMD loverboy, just can't justified 200$ more for at least same performance in 4080 or 600$ for just 20% more performance in 4090 which is technically best performing GPU without the question. I'm planning in the future such upgrade for my computer as minimum. If I will be lucky maybe 7800X3D but again for just gaming it is questionable to justified additional 250$ just for some minimal gain I will definitely got with it. For such AMD upgrade BestBuy MB will be AsRock B650E PG Riptide, good value and will easy support future upgrades even to some future 8950X3D if will be needed. Yes this MB got build in WiFi6E based on Intel AX210 for supporting best connectivity for Quest, Pico or Crystal. Future prove.
