I am close to upgrading my 9900K PC, already have a 4090, play mainly VR (looking at the Somnium when it comes out). If I was playing DCS / games only, I would go with the 7800X3D. I also do astro imaging processing which is extremely CPU intensive, processing can take 12 hours, with a higher resolution camera could be 24 hours on my existing kit.

I am therefore looking at the 7950X3D as a compromise solution. Does anyone have any experience with this CPU for DCS  VR gaming, wondering if the higher boost clock of the 7950X3D gives any advantages. I am aware that the 7950X3D can be a bit more temperamental but its an (expensive) compromise. Will be aiming for 64 Gb of memory.

The only issue that I know of is to do with core scheduling, this may not be a problem now though.  From what I understand, only half of the CPU has access to the 3D cache so you may want to force DCS onto those cores.

Thanks, that’s the issue I am trying to get some someone with real world experience to advise on.

From what I hear (I don't have first-hand experience), core scheduling is an issue in general for gaming - not just DCS. If you really want the 7950X3D, I'd recommend using Project Lasso to limit DCS (and all other games) to the CCD with the V-cache on it.

I'll assume you mean 64GB?
64Gb is far below the minimum system requirements for DCS 😉

Hi, I have the 7950X3D, 64 GB of DDR5 RAM, 4090 GPU, etc.

I have no issues with DCS. Eagle Dynamics have core scheduling built into DCS so I no longer need to set affinity (I use Process Lasso) for DCS. I still do set affinity for my VR headset (Varjo Aero) and all other processes though. I put the VR related processes on the better performing CCD to (in theory) optimize performance.

I have posted videos of my time in DCS VR using this system (pretty much all of the videos this year and on) so you can always have a peek at them. I play around with settings still to tweak my experience. I'm very happy with the results. I'm happy to answer questions which you may have.

Many thanks for the reassurance, may have to do a bit of tinkering but sounds like no major issues.
