Masters of the Air Server

Recommended Posts

I’ve been waiting sooo long for Masters of the Air to come out that I got the urge to do a thing, so I made a simple little mission in honor of the event. A simple bomber escort\intercept mission. I got the idea from some AI missions I had made for a guy named Nefarious over on another sim in their mission editor a couple of years ago. So I thought it would be a good learning to replicate something similar in the DCS mission editor and to practice my Moose scripting.

AI bombers follow a route to a target. One side protects them, one side tries to prevent them from reaching their destination. Easy peazy. Lemon sqeezie.

The target is an airfield near Paris. I looked it up and the 100th BG actually did do some missions in the Paris area, so it is not completely off base, but this is not intended to be a reenactment of any particular historical mission. I’ll run it for a while if anyone is interested. Anyway, I hope some of you get to try it, have some fun with it. See you up in the Dark Blue. -CptTrips

(This mission was inspired by the coming release of Masters of the Air limited series on AppleTV.
However I don’t have a Germany map, nor the right skins, nor perhaps the correct aircraft. This is not a historical scenario, but hopefully will provide some of the flavor of protecting bombers to their target or trying to stop them. More “homage” than “reenactment” of anything from the book or series.)

A group of 36 B-17 bombers have formed over East Anglia and are en route to bomb a strategic airbase outside of Paris, France.

From mission start at 0900 hrs, to the arrival over target at 1000 hrs, the mission will take no more than 60 minutes. The intended bomber route is marked on the F10 map (See briefing image 1). Time hacks are noted on the path that will approximate where the bomber formation can be found at any given increment of mission time. Or at least close enough for a tally.

Air spawn (sorry the intent is to maintain a combat cadence- I want players in the fight not slowly climbing up to 28000 ft) for escorts and interceptors are at appropriate distances.

Note briefing image 2. The group name for each spawn is encoded with the mission time that spawn becomes available. The spawns are time-staggered and placed along the route so that both sides can join\re-join the fight quickly at any point during the mission. The idea is to facilitate a continuous rolling battle following along the bombers all the way to their drop point at T+60 min (1000hrs). So if you come in the server and the current mission time is 0935 hrs, you can spawn at anything with that time mark or earlier. You can spawn from an earlier location if needed, but it will take more time to re-join the formation.

So in this case of a current mission time of 0935 hrs, you could spawn with a group named “(0935 hrs or later)-10” or “(0920 hrs or later)-6” or “(0915 hrs or later)-3” etc...

(*Pro Tip: While in spectator mode before spawning, you can escape out and go look at the F10 map. Note the mission time on the F10 map upper right corner. Review the marked bomber path and estimate where the bombers currently are by interpolating between time hash marks, then go to select roles and pick a spawn with the appropriate specified time. If it is close, you can spawn in a slot that is not enabled yet and wait until it is time and you will auto spawn in then.)

Spits will be available at spawns close to the English coast but not at later spawns.
FW 190-A8 and FW 190-D will be carrying rockets.

If you prefer, I have set up temporary voice channels on the Helo-Ops Discord. Look for the “Masters of the Air” category and you will find Redfor and Bluefor tactical voice channels.
https://discord.gg/65XKM3E7te

Victory Conditions:

Bluefor – Arrive at the target at 1000hrs with at least 50% of bombers remaining (i.e. at least 18 bombers still alive).

Redfor – Destroy more than 50% of the bomber force before it arrives over target, forcing the mission to be aborted (i.e. kill at least 19 bombers).

After a Redfor or Bluefor victory, the mission will restart back to it’s initial state and repeat.

Good luck, and good hunting.
