I have a quest 2 (Q3 coming today yay!) and have been using the link cable, if I don't have that cable strapped down to the headset in a couple places it desyncs and DCS crashes when moved on accident. I normaly experience this when putting on my noise canceling headset on over the quest and somehow moving the link cable just a tiny bit.

I see some people mentioning using air link or virtual desktop.

Can someone give me feedback on what they have tried and what works best for them? I know one big advantage to using the cable is that the headset battery is being charged or maintained while using (I have one of the charging link cables) but the major downside for me is when it gets moved and DCS crashes.

I use both the link cable and Virtual Desktop and switch back and forth depending on what I feel like.

The link cable offers a rock-solid connection and good visuals. Virtual Desktop has way more customizable options, and offers a really solid experience overall. The only real downsides to VD are that it requires a strong WiFi connection and the headset isn’t charging while in use.

I’ve tried Airlink but prefer VD due to the options offered by VD.

VD is great but with the following caveats.

  • There can be some lag at lower FPS (below about 55) for a noticeable black mask when turning your head.
  • SSW is smooth but causes strange lateral motion artifacts that I don't see with oculus ASW.
  • Contrast is a bit too unnatural out of the box and needs some adjustment with OXRTK.
  • You need a decent router close to your headset connected directly to your pc by ethernet. Even then some people can get variable results due to interference from other routers etc

Oculus cable benefits over VD:

  • You can get a higher bitrate (960 Mbps) which gives clear and more natural visuals.
  • Less lag so no black mask effect.

Oculus cable disadvantages:

  • You are tethered.
  • Make sure you have a decent cable. Decent ones are not necessarily expensive. Mine cost £10.

Overall with the QP I prefer oculus cable but things change and VD is always improving. I keep checking with every VD update. And, ocourse, meta are not really focussed in PCVR so a future oculus update might break it!

Perhaps this would be a question best for the VR section.  However, since I'm here....

VD is very easy.  Airlink with my Q3 does not allow audio into my headset (can't be bothered to care much since it's the worst solution of the 3).  Cable link is just fine, I just tend to get a bit lazy since I have no latency or stuttering issues with VD.  Why change a good thing, right?

I mainly use the Link cable, but also has VD installed.

Apart from the velcro strap that comes with the Meta Link cable I have attached the cable with an additional Velcro strap to the Quest 3 headstrap (not using the original headstrap).

I don´t see much difference between Link or VD connection, so most often I use the link cable.

BTW: look forward going from the Quest 2 to the Quest 3, the clarity is way better with slightly better performance.

I'm using VD with my Q3. I find the quality just as good and it's nice to have no cable. If I start to run low on charge I plug in a power bank. You can also get battery straps too if you like.

I put a WiFi6 access point in my games room so it connects at 2.5gbps and don't notice any latency.
