dozer76 Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I though I would ask for your opinions on an upgrade that I am planning. Current system: CPU: Athlon 64 x2 5600+ @ 2.9 GHz(stock) RAM: 4GB DDR2-800 Mobo chipset: 790GX Videocard: HD4870 1GB (stock) Here are my proposed upgrades: CPU: Intel Q9550 or AMD Phenom II 940 or AMD Phenom II 720 Of course with the Intel I would have to get a new mobo and I think I would get faster ram. The mobo would be a P45 board with DDR3-1600 ram. The Intel would cost me roughly $50 more to upgrade than sticking with AMD. Phenom II 955 @ 9.41Ghz - 4 GB DDR3 RAM - 2xHD4870's
crazysundog Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I currently run an E8500 C2D, and plan to upgrade to a Q9550, which i will overclock the snot out of! The situation is that I will not need to buy a new mobo; and if i did I would make the jump to an i7 920 and overclock that! The prudent thing to do would be get the Phenom II 720 (I hear the are great for OC'ing), but if you cant stand money laying around uselessly, get an X58 mobo and an i7 920, (with ram of course) and if you shop around you could find a package deal... I guess I'm saying decide between the $250 upgrade or the $1000 upgrade and go from there!
RobGordon Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 If you decide to go with Intel, then get the i7 920. It's not "that expensive" and can be overclocked to 3.8 GHz with air cooling so that should be enough power for the near future. But as you mentioned, the downside is the additional investment in a new mobo and new RAM but since you have to do that anyways (when changing to an Intel chipset), go for the new one. dozer76 Posted April 15, 2009 Author Posted April 15, 2009 I thought about the upgrade and I just ordered the Phenom II 720. For the near future I think it will be the best upgrade option. I do agree that if I were to get a new motherboard I would go all out with an i7. Thanks for the help.:D Phenom II 955 @ 9.41Ghz - 4 GB DDR3 RAM - 2xHD4870's
