How to (best) avoiding landing conflicts with the AI planes?

At the very end of the first (combat) mission of the campaign, a plane from my flight crashed into me on the runway while I was landing. I thought I had given them an RTB command, but maybe I did something wrong. What is the correct procedure to prevent my flight from "landing" with me in formation?

They should break formation and RTB, but that's all core-AI stuff, I can't make them do it. They are suppsoed to obey the built in menu
