_Defi Posted May 23, 2024 Posted May 23, 2024 I am wondering, does the brightness/contrast controls for the SHKVAL TVM affect the ability of the SHKVAL to lock on targets? There are conflicting experiences I have that sometimes it just won't lock the target, even though it's a valid live target, and trying to Reset everything didn't work either. It's as if the Laser is not working properly/overheated or something. But I have always wondered if it's to do with these brightness/contrast knobs since the SHKVAL is electro-optical after all.
LuseKofte Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 I discovered the same in night missions. It simply did not want to lock. But that was when we had first addition of the bs. I then noticed that by tuning the contrast and light on the screen it was easier to lock. But to me that did not make any sense. So I did not want to make a fool of myself saying it out loud. now when we have bs 3 I noticed it easyer to loose a target when a tree obstruct it. Before it could stick with the target when it drove between trees. I read somewhere that it did have problem with locking targets in darkness. But cannot confirm it.

I have tried this with a complete black screen using brightness/contrast and a complete white screen using these knobs. They do absolutely nothing to stop you from locking a target. If it cannot lock then its either not big enough target area or the laser has gone too hot or just a bug. I found it helps to reset everything and then try to lock again. Sometimes this does work.

I am not bothered with this problem too much. It kind of realistic the few times it is a problem
SumatraVR Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 Found that problem as well in night missions, but it's ok since I can see where the target is anyway. Just designate it even if it's not locked, your Vikhrs will go there anyway and hopefully you'll hit the target 1
Schlomo1933 Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 DCS BS3 has no contrast lock. It’s just a fake lock. (This was never changed since BS1, because the DCS engine can’t handle contrast locks) BTW… The real Ka-50 wasn’t designed for night attacks. Because he has no flir. But the shark can operate at night with illumination rockets for a short time . 1
