Guest Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Hi there -- I've been playing flight sims for the past 3 years and recently bought myself an X52 Pro and a copy of DCS Black Shark. I'm absolutely delighted by the quality of the game; it's exactly what I was looking for in a combat flight sim. Anyway, I have a few questions about flight features the BS has. On the collective there is a switch that varies between ascent and descent mode. I have descent mode bound to a key on my joystick, and though I can see it change modes when I press the button, there doesn't seem to be any notable difference in altitude or my climb/descent rate. Also, there is a "brake" lever that's also located on the collective that doesn't seem to do anything, though I've read that it's somehow supposed to lock the altitude. I'd really appreciate it if someone could shed some light on those commands -- also, if anyone has tips on landing on a moving ship (I've only done this a handful of times), I'd like to hear them.
LastRifleRound Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Welcome to your new addiction and the community! There is no ascent mode, the switch is for "Route" and "Descent" Descent mode will only work while auto-hover is engaged, and must be held down. The autopilot will then begin a 2 m/s descent. The Brake is for when the altitude hold autopilot channel is active. Holding the brake allows you to change atlitude without the aircraft fighint you. Release it when at the desired altitude, and the autopilot will hold that particular altitude. Someone who's not so noob will have to answer the ship part. I drink seawater when I try it :P
Guest Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Thanks! I had a feeling that 'descent' had something to do with auto-hover. I'm going to fire up the game and test it out since it sounds pretty useful.
LastRifleRound Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Yes sir! Be careful to stop at about 6m or so AGL. 4m and below the autopilot deactivates, leaving you in a potentially fatal aircraft attitude if you haven't trimmed recently.
AlphaOneSix Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 The collective brake performs two functions, only one of which is modeled in the game. First off, it physically holds the collective in place so that you can take your hand off of it and it won't creep up or down on you. The idea is that you release the brake to move the collective, then set it again when you're done moving it. In addition to holding the collective in position, setting the brake also sets your desired altitude when you have the altitude hold mode of the autopilot on. Like a trim button for the collective.
