Lawn*Dart Posted June 16, 2024 Posted June 16, 2024 My wingman and I have both been unable to get shrikes to guide at all when flying online as clients. The Shrikes guide regularly (well, as regularly as a Shrike ever does) when we are in single-player, and they guide regularly for the host when hosting a multiplayer session, but again, not for the clients. We have tested this with multiple seekers against multiple radars, and it is a consistent bug for us every time. I have attached tracks from both my (Host) perspective and my wingman's (Client) perspective during our most recent test. This particular test was using the Mk. 22 seeker against SA-2 Tracking radars, but we have tested many combos, all result the same. He attempts multiple shots, nothing guides. I attempt multiple shots, most guide. This is repeatable when we swap roles and he hosts and I am the client. This happens regardless of whether the Shrikes are loaded already in the Mission Editor or are manually loaded in-mission via the Rearm/Refuel screen. Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone else been able to get their Shrikes to work normally when joining a multiplayer mission as a client? Shrike-Bug-Client.trk Shrike-Bug-Host.trk 1

primus_TR Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 I haven't watched the track but shrikes will guide to a tracking radar only when it's actively guiding a missile (at you or someone else). Try it against the sa2 search radar and see if it works.

That said, the Shrikes were fired during active missile guidance by the SA-2. Interestingly, I have noticed that even when used in "non-bugged" situations (single player, hosting) a Shrike will not tend to guide to a tracking radar if the radar is emitting away from it (e.g. the radar is guiding a missile towards a target to its the east, and the shrike is launched from its west). I assumed that was intended/correct behavior when dealing with early ARMs and directional radars?
ACS_Dev Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 I main WSO and I can say with certainty that out of a dozen or so shrikes I have seen launched, none of them sync properly for me. They all just appear to go ballistic when launched from an aircraft I am backseating. We have similarly had abysmal hitrates with them, even when actively tracked. They tend to fall just short, maybe 20 meters. "Got a source for that claim?" I had read that the North Vietnamese pointed radar beam to the side, and then turned it off to confuse early shrike seeker heads. Not sure if this is modeled in DCS. In my experience, I can get a SA2 search radar (flat face) without fail ever time with the correct seeker head for it, but the fan song I can get only when it is guiding a missile at me, that is, when both the shrike and the sam are in the air. Very ineffective and risky but that is the only way I can score a hit with a fan song (sa2 taking radar)

I assumed that was intended/correct behavior when dealing with early ARMs and directional radars? All radars are directional radars, however, some may rotates and thus provide 360 coverage where the main beam scans the area. This means that majority of energy is direction into a single directions, but aside from the main beam there are side lobs and back lobe which for some of the radars may be strong enough to guide a missile on. If your missile can pick up only the main lobe then it's update interval is pretty high and this may lead to imprecision. Aside from this, some of the radars rely on the reflections from the ground. This can also create a "field" effect where you do not have precise information on where exactly the radar is located. nullSee the attached image. Note these diagrams are expressed in dB, so do not assume the linear proportion between e.g. main/back lobe. 9 minutes ago, primus_TR said: I had read that the North Vietnamese pointed radar beam to the side, and then turned it off to confuse early shrike seeker heads. You can counter this by firing the missiles that rely on different means of guidance.
Coenraad Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Playing online exclusively and trying to use Shrikes against SA3 and SA2 both in direct and WCRS mode and they fail to track every single time. Using the seekerheads from the info table. 1
Foxmike Posted June 28, 2024 Posted June 28, 2024 (edited) I can confirm now, that the Shrike is bugged in many constellations. I made a test setup with SA 2 and SA 6 Radars only . Interestingly only the MK22 guided well when fired at the SA2 but hit the SA 6. Retested without SA2 the MK22 hit the SA 6 and was well guided but there wasn't any lock tone. Firing MK22 at SA2 with good lock tone goes only ballistic, no guidance. MK36 makes good lock tone against SA6 but again no guidance. The only working tone and guidance was MK49Mod1 vs. firing SA8. The used F4 was client in my testing scenario. Edited June 28, 2024 by Foxmike fast fingers 2
aphill Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 My friends and I have the same problem in multiplayer
=475FG= Dawger Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 I tested Shrikes against Fire Cans on a dedicated server and they guided when fired directly at the emitter.
CaptJackG Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 We did a test on our server. When playing on a multiplayer with no other players the Shrike will guide. As soon as someone else joins the server the Shrike will no longer guide, mostly seem to just fall short.

I fired a Shrike at a Fire Can today. Damaged the radar a bit but totally demolished the generator parked next to it. The AAA stopped firing and I guess that was the point of the exercise. Close but no cigar Edited July 14, 2024 by HotTom Exceptional engineering...and a large hammer to make it fit!

The SA-2 wouldn’t shoot at Phantoms but thats another story.
