spudmonkey Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 Hi all, Been practicing some data link excerises, esp' sending wingies to stand off positions prior to sending them attack targets. I've noticed that as soon as I lose LOS with the wingies they don't respond to radio orders! On the ABBRIS they lose their tail and then disappear, (it also shows enemy radar/threat circles changing their shape/range). So do you need line of sight to wingies to send them orders? Also why don't enemy threat circles disappear after they've been destroyed? BTW, ED thanks for such a great sim, looking forward to the Hog and Apache.

ZaltysZ Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 Yes, D-Link needs line of sight to operate. Shape of threat depends on terrain and your altitude (for example, if mountain is between you and center of threat zone, then ABRIS will cut out some part from that zone). However, threat zones remain even if you destroy the threats, because there is no automatic way for ABRIS to know that the threat has been removed. Wir sehen uns in Walhalla.
spudmonkey Posted May 16, 2009 Author Posted May 16, 2009 OK thanks 159th Viper, Shame theres no way to tell wingies what altitude to fly/change to (they seem to settle to NOE in many cases! (which forces the FL to increase his alt' to send radio orders)
jimiC Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 datalink is transmitted and recvd on the same vhf/UHF frequencies the KA50's radios use. VHFs require by their very nature, line of sight. You techinically shouldnt be able to communicate via radio with a wingman that is on the other side of a range of hills to you. Theyre also only effective out to about 250nm give or take between aircraft when line of sight is unhindered. Although i havent tried it and it may not be modelled, one option (and this may not even be the case in the russian military in RL yet anyway), is that an AWACS or JSTARS type aircraft, operating at altitudes over the battlefield, or just behind the lines would in theory provide retransmit for frequencies being used amongst units down low or even on the ground.
