I see the max effective ranges on the A2A and it's aim 8k why can't I lock a target, not until 3.1nm?:cry:

 

Same for the Mav's 20k and can not lock on until 3.0nm?:helpsmilie:

 

Any reason please help this lock -on rookie...:mad:

There are several things you should take into account when you use the aim-9 and other IR guided missiles:

1. It locks the target at greatest distance when it is in tail aspect (you are approaching it from behind), when it is head on the target must be very close for the missile seeker to lock on it. Another thing - even if in tail aspect the missile is able to lock on the target early the fact that the target is getting away from you means the missile will have to fly longer to reach the target which means you will get LA (launch autorization) later.An example in numbers: lets say the missile is able to lock on the target at 10 miles in tail aspect, if it is moving fast the max range at which you can fire the missile will be 3 miles. In head on the same target will be locked at 5 miles and you will be able to launch in the moment of the lock.

2. The size of the target (the number of engines too though i don`t know if this is modelled in the game). If it is using afterburner. So B1 bomber in afterburner = max range lock, OH-58 Kiowa helicopter = min range lock :)

3. The altitude is also important especially for the launch range. If it is launched at lower altitudes the missile`s range will be shorter (the air is thicker) - so longest ranges at higher altitudes. As the A-10 is not air superiority fighter rarely you will get the chance to fire AA missiles at 20000 feets so you have to accept the shorter range closer to the ground.

 

Note: There are several discussions in this forum about the missiles ranges in the game. I personally think the range of most of them is slightly (or not so slightly for some) reduced as i`ve never managed to achieve the max launch range mentioned by the manifacturer even if flying very fast, very high, trying different targets in different aspects, etc. So if not fixed in the upcoming patch play it like this and pray for more realism in DCS:...(Fighter). :thumbup:

I think Mavericks sucks in LO (lock). They lock not object it self but terrain under unit as Yoda tested and I rather full agree with Yoda's test.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D
