As a DCS rookie (just started Dec 2024) I still try to master the basic training lessons and keyboard / stick bindings. Is there any key to hide the stick and prevent it from disturbing the instrument panel?

FYI: DCS running on Win11 workstation, Turtle Beach VelocityOne flight deck stick and throttle.

System: HP Z2 Tower, Win11 24H2, i9-14900K, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD (M2) + 18TB HDD (Sata), GeForce RTX4070 TI Super 16GB VRAM, Samsung Odyssey 57" curved monitor (main screen) + BenQ 32" UW3270 (secondary screen), VKB Gunfighter Ultimate MK4 + S-TECS Throttle

IF I remember correctly...and that's a big "if"... you click at the bottom of the stick to hide the stick.  I don't know if there's a keybinding.  I'm still at work and as soon as I get to the PC I run DCS on, I'll check. 🙂

Thanks, that was too easy 🙂 Unfortunately my mouse controls the view direction and there is no visible cursor to select any cockpit item. I'm  too stupid to know how to disable the view control and get a cursor to select cockpit items, at least the mouse column in the controls table is completely blank.

LOL! 🙂  Yeah... that SAME problem has "bit" me in the past as well... and there's a WAY to get the mouse to focus on clickable controls in the cockpit.  I just can't remember off the top how to do it.  My work schedule has been a bit hectic lately.  But as soon as I can get to my other PC, I'll have a look and see if I can help you out. 🙂

Just so I understand this, you're using your mouse for "view", and not head/eye tracking... right?  Thanks! 🙂

Correct. I guess I'm just too bloody new to DCS to find the fix. Thanks !

I'll do my best to get you an answer, BUT... I used DCS for almost 6 months before I bought TrackIR...and I did pretty well!  Funny thing... I bought it from Natural Point on Amazon, and somehow I ended up with a counterfeit... which is BETTER than the "real" one.  Either way, it does the same thing, except my "fake" is wireless.  It took me about 10 days to get completely comfortable with it, and within that time I tweaked a profile that I liked.  But it's a big, BIG advantage in DCS.  There are other head/eye trackers as well.  I'm just saying... I think they're well, WELL worth the money.  🙂

well ... I made my 1st experiments with opentrack. After getting the movement smoothed out and well filtered - which took some time - I tested it with DCS. Sorry, but not for me. This constant moving of view field on my 57" ultra wide screen makes me sick and loosing orientation. For my humble flying needs the 57" UW view is wide enough and much less sickening to cope with, at least to me. I also thought about VR (Quest 3 ?) but I am afraid this might be even worse for me. May be some time in the future but not for now.

Atm I still try to get that damn stick out of my view and/or disable the view direction from my mouse. Does it make any difference that my "mouse" is in fact a Kensington slim blade track ball?

Motion sickness?!  Dang!  That's a BAD thing to have to deal with in any type of simulation!  TrackIR "might" be better than OpenTrack... from what I've seen, it's more responsive... more "precision".  But if the problem is motion related, then it will probably give you the same trouble.

One of my kids is a USAR Blackhawk pilot.  Him and the others fly a LOT, and generally speaking they're IMPERVIOUS to motion sickness.  BUT, some of their simulators are full motion sims, and those make a few of the guys sick.  Seems weird, and he can't explain why it happens.  He's one that's affected by it.  IRL, he has NO problems.  But in the full-motion sim, he gets motion sick.  The only time I ever have a problem is IF I have to ride in the backseat of a car... and again, no idea why the backseat bothers me and the front seat doesn't.  I've got a brother who gets motion sick pretty much ALWAYS unless he's driving.  Maybe it runs in my family?... I dunno.

I'm not sure if your mouse type will make a difference.  I'm still working and I'm HOPING to get done by 7:00 PM EST.  After that, I'm hoping to be able to do some DCS, and I'll try to get you an answer. 🙂

Motion sickness? Well, not really. I don't have a problem in the car, elevator nor on a roller coaster, in an airplane or at sea. Maybe it's because the visual impressions in the brain don't match the physically perceived impressions of movement? This could also be the case with your USAR pilot son. In any case, I'm too old anyway to test this again in the pilot's seat, hence DCS and the other "we don't name it here" blue screen product.

Did you add deadzones and added some smooth curves as I take it you didn't need to move your head much?

Interesting! In what way? Can you use the original NaturalPoint software?

Many will debate you on that one. 😉 It really comes down to the FPS of camera and matching it with your FPS in like 30/60/90/120 etc.

I believe NaturalPoint has one feature that is missing from OpenTrack. I have Delanclip attached on the left, which means the distance from the camera changes when I turn my head. I believe NaturalPoint's software has an option to smooth this out.

Cheers!

Okey dokey now... try this...

L-Alt+c (Clickable mouse cockpit mode on/off)

Then click down near the base of the flight stick.  Unfortunately, I can't find a keybinding for that.  Let me know. 🙂

In sniped you in the post above. 😊One can also double click the mouse wheel.

Edit: Those modules that can hide the stick uses "backspace" as the default keybind. Try it perhaps?

LAlt+C worked, thanks. Unfortunately clicking the stick base didn't help to hide it. so I'm back to my initial issue.

Of couse I added deadzones and spend some time to filter and smooth out the head movement with opentrack. But it wasn't very helpful even with large center deadzones and very gentle movements. With a 57" 1000R display you most likely do not see left and right edge of the display at the same time any more unless you are sitting much further away than usual (which I don't do). Therefore you anyway turn your head from side to side to check what is moving at the very edges. But if each turn makes the display move even further that's causing a lot of irritation. I guess with a 57" 1000R display you just don't need any additional head tracking.

Backspace hides the stick in the F/A-18C I "think"...as I remember.  In the Ka-50, it resets the targeting mode. 🙂

Really? 🤔 Just Googled. You need to click at the lower end of the base where it goes into the floor it seems.

Thanks for the explanation, I'm thinking about getting larger screens.

Well, I tested clicking the stick base and anywhere else at or next to the stick, also with BS and any key modifier I could think of, but no success. I guess hiding the sting is simply not possible. I also could not find any corresponding command in the controls table. I am just flying SU-27 FC training lessons atm but it's the same behaviour during a normal mission. May be it's a hidden key binding somewhere hidden deeply in the core or only avaialble in another model than the SU-27, just guessing. Anyway, thanks for your help. I guess, I have to live with it.

Here's what happened...weird as <profanity>.  Well... not really... if you think about the world of product counterfeits.  I ordered the TrackIR-5 from Amazon FROM the NaturalPoint store there.  It arrived and I used it for MONTHS... quite happy with it.  But there's a small switch on the underside of the TrackClip-Pro, and construction seemed just a little different than the photos I found.  I mean, it was very, VERY close.  But mine seemed to be a better build quality.  I went on a mission one weekend to find out EXACTLY what that switch did!  The first thing I did was to determine IF the switch had anything to do with IR emission from the unit.  I've got an AN/PVS-14 night vision goggle, so I just turned it on and looked AT the TrackClip-Pro emitters while manipulating the switch.  With the power cable plugged in, it seemed to vary the intensity just slightly.  But with the power cable DISCONNECTED, that switch acted as the ON/OFF switch for the unit!  So I had a "wireless" unit, and at that point I strongly suspected it was a counterfeit.  I spent a little time at the PC researching this, and I'm not the only one who has received one of these... believing that I was getting an authentic product.  However, everybody... without exception... including myself!...also LIKES the counterfeit BETTER than the authentic unit!  The theory is that the factory in China where the device is manufactured took it upon themselves to insert the counterfeit into the supply chain.  So is it really a counterfeit?  GOOD question!  It runs NaturalPoint native software!  But it's wireless, AND it's built better.  It's definitely NOT going to break the first time you drop it on the floor.  Anyway... that's my story and I'm sticking to it. 🙂

Just to close the hide stick issue: it only works in a clickable cockpit which does not seem to be the case for the SU-27 (FC) module. Just got this from the the german DCS community.

Actually... where you click on the stick depends on your current viewpoint in the cockpit.  If you position your mouse at the top of the stick, and drag it downward on the stick, see if a certain section causes the mouse pointer to go "green"...as if it were hovering over a clickable control.  THAT'S the spot! 🙂

Well now... this is odd... Here's the link where I bought it - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NMXWSBG?ie=UTF8&psc=1  ...and it's not purchasable anymore.  Moreover that, the product shown in the photos is most definitely NOT what I received.  Also, I notice that the seller was NOT NaturalPoint...according to the purchase record.   If you look closely there's a comment in the page that says, "About this item - IT FROM XUQCAH MATERIAL AND TALENKEB PARTMENT".  I didn't notice that before.

Maybe Amazon left the item searchable, but not purchasable because somebody complained it was a fake... which is a real shame, because it's an AWESOME and "improved" fake! 🙂   But that link above is what's in the purchase history of my wife's Amazon account. 🙂

I'll take some photos of my TrackClip-Pro so you can see the differences.

Search for TrackNP instead of 'IR' in the end. I own one. It is very good. 👍(I bet it is the same one @Avi is pointing out.)

Because of absurd import and consumption taxes, in some place in the world, original Track IR is an absolute wallet wrecker.

I'm using it on this video with the active IR emitter. Precision mode turned off in the Track IR app.

Edit: to avoid 100% subject being off from the thread topic.

If you want always the virtual stick off, there is an option in the DCS menus to keep them off at spawn. Ka-50 has no binding to hide the stick. If FC aircraft virtual sticks are always showing even with the option to show the sticks set to 'OFF' in the menus, it means they are not available to be toggled off anyways.

The TrackIR receiver... mounted on top of my PC display looks JUST like what TrackIR advertises.... NOT so with the TrackClip-Pro though.  Here's the one that I have.  ...most definitely NOT a "real" TrackIR product, but it works VERY well.image.jpeg, but null

This is interesting... about TrackIR and TrackNP...
