I'm having some trouble with this, when I move the crosshair to adjust the target, the missile seeker seems to want to snap to the centre of the object, like a point, rather than go after the specific part of a target.

I built a mission to practice using these on, and it uses the new headquarters ground object, as it's nice and large, and I wanted to play about with hitting different parts of it, eg posting it through the window of an enemy general, so I press the designate button and move the X over say the upper right of the building, and release the button, the missile then changes to this, but then about 1-2 seconds later it snaps back to the centre of the object on its own.

Is this a bug, or am I not doing something right?

It locks on contrast, so you may not have enough contrast with whatever specific point you're trying to hit for it to hit that.  It's not really that level of precision weapon so you're not going to have MAV in force correlate mode accuracy likely.

It's not an IR contrasting object, it's a building, and why would say the upper right corner of it be any warmer than the steps at the base of it.

We're not talking about the hot engine block at the front of a truck.

What I think you're trying to do is Force Correlate (F/C), but you are probably using centroid tracking.

From our DCS: F/A-18C manual, page 397:

  • Force Correlate. Cycles between centroid tracking and forced correlation. Centroid tracking attempts to track bright or dark shapes in the image and is more effective against moving vehicles. Forced correlation attempts to track part of an image and is more effective when pinpointing part of a larger structure.

Try this to achieve the intended precision. If you feel there's still a problem, please create a track file and share it with us.

Yes, but the OP is using the SLAM-ER not a MAV 🙂 so FC isn't available to him. I looked wrong page.  I am incorrect.

Please read the DCS: F/A-18C manual in the page I cited.

Oops, I accidentally typed page 357 rather than 397 when I pulled it up so got the MAV page.  Sorry, you are correct 😳

No problem. But for a moment you made me think twice about my post... 🙂
