Jyge Posted January 2 Posted January 2 I just noticed in Mission 01 that you need to set-up the TCN and IFF. I am not sure whether it has any meaning, until now I have only been the receiving end of TCN, so first time I am setting it up for myself. So Just TCN in UFC, type in the freq A/A and On, right? Just asking myself, where does the system now that I am sending? I thought A/A is sort of for aerial senders, where do I define that I am the sender? Bit confused here... Then IFF - not sure if it has any meaning here - I just want to do things for some perfection. So I am not sure I can follow these M3 M4 and SPOT stuffs. I actually opened the .pdfs although from the intro I got the intro that it is ok to be a lazy bastard. Well, I could not find a damn thing... I need to crack on, I have mission 01 on pause and I am sure that I need to play it couple of times, but now I'll just crack on...
firefly25 Posted January 2 Posted January 2 Regarding TCN you're right, it's the "TACAN yardstick" functionality that gives the distance to your wingman. Hitting A/A and entering the code in the kneeboard will get the functionality. In TACAN there is the T/R (Transmit/Receive) and RCV (Receive only) functionalities, so when you use the default T/R you are transmitting by default as well. IFF doesn't seem to be implemented and there's very little documentation regarding DCS because of that, but if you're interested, there's some insight in NATOPS manual. I also wonder how much M3 is used in tactical settings given it's not encrypted and M4 is - anyone have any insight on this?
Raisuli Posted January 25 Posted January 25 I never got the yardstick, just the endless spinning from a TACAN with nothing to do. Haven't given up on it; maybe that settled and I failed to notice chasing after a lead aircraft being driven by an AI that just got back from Tallinn on the ferry with bags of booze... Mode 3 IFF is civilian squawk as far as I know.

It is strictly DISTANCE and has no bearing information, so the TCN needle will keep rotating around because it has no where to point to. However if you look in the top left corner of your HSI page (or SA if it's not priority) you'll get the distance to your wing.

And that distance is (relatively) short. Makes sense. Thanks!
