I often lack a great deal of focus and so I split my time between the Wolfpack and Beware! Beware! campaigns. My love for the P47 won out and I spent a chunk of time flying that campaign first.

So back to this one. It feels like a very familiar style: you are part of a larger war, your actions are of consequence but not to the point of single-handedly determining the outcome. Survive, don’t be a hero. It’s a style I like. As a pilot I should be able to decide if the engagement makes sense and then live with the consequences.

I can only imagine being part of a real effort like this, but these missions give an armchair pilot like me a chance to get 1% of a clue. The missions are well made and give you a combination of the boredom of flying give or take the same route every other day whilst still making sure you always have the chance to get yourself into a lot of trouble. Now I’m not an ace fighter pilot, as demonstrated by my 4 confirmeds, but I am certain a better pilot can get a double or triple ace in this campaign.

As with Wolfpack, I can’t recommend this enough. By chance I had just finished First Light by Geoffrey Wellum and I think some inspiration may have been taken from this excellent book. If you like the campaign, I recommend the book as well. Always nice to see some of the reality of the war reflected in a campaign I fly!

Thank you and congratulations on completing it! Funny you mention the mission design and the boredom vs action. The best part of historical campaigns like this is that I had nothing to do with this sort of 'dramaturgy'. I merely followed the combat reports and squadron records. Sometimes real life is stranger than fiction 😉
