Considering the HTC VIVE Focus Vision as replacement for HP Reverb G2. Will it work for DCS?

The biggest weakness of the Quest Pro was that it has the same CPU as the Quest 2, which makes it rather poor for standalone use. But for simming you don't need a powerful CPU in the headset, so it is actually quite well suited for that use case.

Can you clarify a bit Aapje on the, .... "which makes it rather poor for standalone use," aspect. I own two Quest Pro's and my son has used the second in wireless mode with AirLink or VD to play games like Skyrim, Fallout 4, and The Room VR: A Dark Matter to outstanding effect with excellent resolution. With the Meta catalog, the QP offers wireless headset VR gaming, ... something that the Varjo Aero and Crystal cannot do (the Crystal can actually do it but it rarely works well, ... another of its numerous problems). I can even play DCS fairly well with no data link cable. It's great. Combine that with the Github hand tracking project and it is my high-end sweetspot over the last year.

A wonderful method for appreciating the beauty of the Multiverse is to learn the language in which it was written, ... mathematics.

I was in this same situation last year and I ended up buying an Aero off ebay.  Something to think about but I know a lot of people aren't willing to buy something second hand.

What he means with standalone is playing games without being connected (through cable, Airlink or VD) to your PC.

Playing DCS, Skyrim, Fallout, etc. through Airlink or VD isn't standalone: the GPU in your computer is still rendering those games.

Thank you Diego, ... somewhere distantly in the back of my memory I knew that the Quest models could play games entirely untethered. I appreciate becoming better educated!

Yes, standalone refers to Quest-games that do not run on the PC. They run on the processor in the headset, which is much stronger in the Quest 3 than in the Quest Pro.

In fact, it is so much stronger that there is a rather popular piece of software that modifies the graphics settings of older games, that were designed for the Quest 2 (which has the same processor as the Pro), so they look much better on the Quest 3.

The QP has the XR2+ processor. The Q2 is just the XR2.

Practically the same then. Benchmarks do not show a significant difference:

True. A technical difference only. Meta claim 50% more performance over the XR2 but that's just salt and pepper. A bit like a 4080 vs a 5080 😉

We can agree on the latter. It appears that the ideal headset does not exist, yet. And I have also noticed that no-one who owns the HTC have replied. Makes me wonder of course.

On the former however I will disagree. You say throw out money as if the Focus Vision is garbage. I do not know.

One could ask a couple of questions: Should both the Quest 3 and the Focus Vision cost the same. Would you still go for the Quest 3?

Should the Focus Vision have had these pancace lenses instead of Fresnel (but the current price difference). Would you still go for the Quest 3?

And finally: Am I willing to pay (significantly) more to stay away from Meta. Well, maybe. I might give them a try for 60 days.

Comparing the price of the Quest 3 to any other headset is probably difficult.  Facebook/Meta essentially subsidize these for the consumer on the hope they buy in to Zuckerbergs vision for a virtual world ecosystem where users can buy games, and where data can be collected to be monetized.

While technically they are very good headsets, they work on PC only at Zuckerberg’s pleasure.  And in my case, the consistency of the PCVR experience with the Quest 3 has been infuriating frequently.  Zuck could remove PCVR functionality via update once they see it’s not beneficial to sell to PCVR users who never use it within their ecosystem (mine runs with the wifi connection turned off).

It might be worth noting that Zuck, Bezos, etc are also currently beholden politically to someone they are afraid of, so chances are good that whatever data a Quest, Iphone, Alexa can collect will be released to whomever the dear leader wishes.  He won’t get in the way of that, as there is no benefit for him to stand up for the user when the consequence is a yuge orange scorched-earth tantrum.

100% agree.
