I can't this to work no matter what I try, the missile is not going active off the rail and will not track a target 2 miles in front of me. I've even jumped in the back seat and and set the missile options to "PH ACT". My understanding is you want the target aircraft lined up with the ADL. I've also tried with the target lined up with the aircraft reticle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Without a WCS track, is it a case?

There was a thread around here (which I cannot locate right now), where I also posted about that very same issue 1 or 2 years ago.

In most of the cases we've come to the conclusion, that the the AIM-54's FOV in that mode is very narrow, and so it is very 'finicky' regarding where your aiming.

And there's also the possibility that the AIM-54's FOV is pointing somewhat below the ADL symbol... so you may have more luck pointing at the target with the "aircraft reticle" (pitch and roll symbol) at the HUD... or somewhere between the  two symbols.

Tried ACM/BRSIT with MiG-29 x 2 around 6nm:

Yes, I made the target in the flood area based on ADL possible according to the HB F-14 manual (Boresight Mode section) according to Tacview.  However, it does not mean that I am always lucky to shoot a target.

Did some testing and was finally able to make it work. Things that I discovered:

1. You can't be too close or too far, seems there is a sweet spot for range

2. Where you line up the shot in the HUD depends on the distance to target

3. Aspect to the target makes a big difference

Based on the testing, I think I'll stick to a PAL lock for short range engagements.

Thanks all!

Yup, BRSIT with the WCS lock and we can break the lock after firing.  It is "truly fire and forgot" according to the HB F-14 manual @ AIM-54 ACM active 🙂

That being, the AIM-54's line of sight on the rail is not even parallel to the aircraft's ADL.

I knew this specific mode of employment was somewhat 'finicky'...
