OneHauteDog Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Looking for some corroboration on the Wolfpack campaign post update. The change to ai flight lead climbing is an absolute godsend. But it seems that, at least on the first mission (admittedly that’s all I had time for), once at altitude and flying cover over the big friends, the ai will now slow down dramatically and make much sharper turns. I know how have to completely cut the throttle and even then, still end up blowing past my flight. I fully intend to dive back in after work today but was just checking to see if anyone else experienced the same.
OneHauteDog Posted March 20 Author Posted March 20 Just had another go at the first mission while I could and during the zig zag pattern, the ai cuts their throttle and speeds from to 160-ish it seems.
Reflected Posted March 20 Posted March 20 The bombers fly at 160 so your flight lead does the same before starting the 360 turn. Catch up- escort- 360- repeat. it’s always been like this except you didn’t notice because you couldn’t catch up. 1 Facebook Instagram YouTube Discord
OneHauteDog Posted March 21 Author Posted March 21 Haha, that’s fair enough. Thanks for the clarification. Back to it then! Appreciate all you do! 1
Reflected Posted March 21 Posted March 21 I wish there was a smoother way, but I'm already pushing the AI's limit to make them fly racetracks over a moving plane. 1 Facebook Instagram YouTube Discord
OneHauteDog Posted March 21 Author Posted March 21 Mission creating/editing seems to me the most complicated thing ever so I'm sure you are. I only brought this up hoping it wasn't a case of "something's fixed, something's broke". It really seems like you mission creators are taking on a task with one hand tied behind your back. Believe it or not but buying and playing through Wolfpack got me to buy a buncha the books you reference. Just finished Zemke's Wolk Pack recently, having previously finished Thunderbolt! Since I've got you and no one else is watching, how goes that 47 ground pounding campaign...? I won't tell.

I've been experimenting a bit, I found a workaround for the top cover squadron (mission 4 for example) but when you're one of the weaving squadrons, it's not really possible... Reflected Posted March 21 Posted March 21 OK, I think I found a way to fine tune it. The secret is to push the next follow task before the AI settles in the briefed position. However, they still throttle back when turning, I have to control over that. Also, it's a very dynamic environment, with 3 squadrons weaving, it's not 100% bulletproof, but I think I managed to make it better. 1 Facebook Instagram YouTube Discord

I had a thought on turning way points. I read there's two ways of doing it, Turning Point and Fly Over Point. I wonder if you can break the turns up into smaller turns to make them smoother. Instead of say, one 60 degree turn at a way point, make them do two successive 30 degree turns. I hadn't considered you were using a follow task, though that makes sense. I don't know squat about what's capable in mission creation/editing, but can you make the AI do sub tasks? Primary task- follow, sub task- initiate 1st 30 degree turn at turn point, initiate 2nd degree turn at second point? I'm gonna have to learn how and experiment.

I had the same idea in Red Flag, where the AI has to fly a wide arc at some point. Adding more turnpoints just made the AI violently turn 5-10 degrees many times. So the idea was scrubbed 1 Facebook Instagram YouTube Discord
