Hardened Aircraft Shelters and Bunkers Strenght

All hardened aircraft shelters and bunkers on the map can be destroyed by a single 500 lb bomb. While NATO HAS in Europe were not super-hardened (like some in the middle east), I beliefe they were built to a standard to resist a direct hit by a 500 lb bomb or a near miss by a 1000 lb bomb. Does anyone know if the eastern HAS were build with a similar strengt or even harder?

Also I would expect that ammunition bunkers and especially those nuclear warheads storage bunkers, to be even stronger.

In general HAS offer only limitted protection.

Here is the example of Mk-84 penetrating the shelter without exploding. It caused minor damage to J-22 from concrete splinters. Just to give idea how much kinetic energy alone can make damage.

The large hole on roof was from another event, when no aircraft was inside.

Airport Ponikve, one of the HAS on west side of the airport and holes on the right wall of the HAS.

Bomb weighting more than 900kg (Mk-84) ran through several meters of ground and armored concrete into the shelter, through the hole I marked with number 1 on photos. Then it ricocheted on the floor of shelter and slammed into the wall. That hole is marked with number 2. The rolling of the bomb caused the splintering of concrete into pieces which damaged the aircraft's tail and mid section. Fortunately not to severe. After the war the tried to take out the bomb outside and on that occasion the hole marked with number 3 was created.

With time we realized they know where exactly the shelters are and that they can destroy the aircrafts inside. Decision was made to remove the aircrafts from shelters and hide them in open by using "little secrets of masking". At the end it turned out that this was a good decision. If we left the airplane in shelter it would receive the direct hit as you can see it in open window on the roof of the shelter.

I am happy to see this bird in the air again...

Very interesting pictures. I have no doubt that the Mk-84 will penetrate and destroy a regular HAS. It has after all 4 times the kinetic energy of a Mk-82.

That is without any explosion. HAS has protective effects but not as originally thought. Will post some more pictures. HAS will work for many of the non-direct hits and against sub-munitions. Precise hits in most cases lead to destruction. Will try to post of these so people realize that HAS is proven not to be a magic solution.

The only thing that worked well are underground shelters built deeper inside mountain sides. One of the most interesting examples was Air Defense HQ, under Strazevica Hill, which was targeted with heavy bombs on daily basis.
