Hi, I'm interested in how IFF works in the hornet and have a few questions about it. Here are a couple:

  • What exactly does the MODE 4 switch do?

  • Is there any indication that we're being interrogated by IFF?

  • What factors contribute to a track being classified as ambiguous rather than unknown in the HAFU system?

Thanks for your help!

It's not an in depth IFF system right now. Most of the switchology doesnt do anything. And no you dont get any indications of interrogation. That's not something i know of to be given to the pilot across any airframe.

Ambiguous is when there are conflicting classifications between on-board and off-board interrogators. For example you ID it as hostile but the awacs ID's it friendly. It's basically never seen because of the aformentioned low fidelity of the system as it is stands.

Currently nothing. However it should change how pilot is informed about being interrogated by IFF from other aircraft. Should it be displayed as "M4 OK" advisory on DDI, and/or additional sound alarm in the headset.

There should be an indication by advisory message and/or voice alert depending on MODE 4 switch position, but as far as i know it is not modeled currently
