Low level WWII dog-fighting puts a lot of demand on the map, unlike high altitude radar/missile engagements.

Any chance this new map can be "lightened" up, to the WWII Normandy Map level?

Low level dog-fighting has required choosing locations like Guguan Island or Maug Atoll (which is awesome by the way), up at the northern end of the chain, because of the smaller land masses.

And this, in turn, puts a demand of Bingo fuel, which limits engagements to ~ 10-15 minutes before the A/C break off and head to Saipan/Tinian.

Water and clouds are both incredible and don't appear to have much "weight".

Missions are generally 8 v. 12 w/ the P-51D-25 and the reskinned Fw-190's.

Scenery and bubble set to minimum, running a 7700K/GTX1080/4K.

This set-up runs 16 v. 12 missions, in the mountains, on the Normandy Map, P-51/P-47/Bf 109/Fw 190.

TIA.

Agreed that this map should focus on performance over visuals. It sounds like ED is working on that, but the current Marianas map has remarkably poor performance for its size.

Performance is horrible, breathtaking visual slideshow at 15 fps here.

😕 opposite here.

Shadows to 'flat' maybe? Because the DCS shadowmaps are horrid in performance and the forest cast a lot of them.

I agree with Wizard, I have an old system ( R3600, RTX2060) but I manage to run DCS mostly on High settings, flat shadows, DLAA, visib range and clouds on Ultra and I get a solid locked 60fps over NTTR and Persian gulf, on Syria I've also 60fps except on a low flight over Beyrouth where I have some drops to 50 fps.

But Marianas... I can hear my PC fighting for his death to display 40/45 fps for what ?  A rock in a middle of nowhere with a bunch of palms.

I think it's the two mysteries of dcs :

How well the syria map perform on my PC

How bad the Marianas do the same ....

Turning Terrain Shadows to FLAT, fixes the terrible stutter on Marianas WWII. The strange thing is that on Modern Marianas you can fly with Terrain Shadows on Default with no FPS problems.

It is a 'trees' issue, that's maybe why. Iraq has the same issue with shadows on 'default'.

Something on the implementation of shadowmaps in DCS seems a bit funky. Not a fan.

But the weird thing is some trees, even dense forest doesnt have this FPS problem like Kola, Marianas Modern, North Syria.

Then you fly over Marianas WWII or Iraq and Default Terrain Shadows is a no go. They should try to even the technology used for trees and forest more.

I just compared Marianas WWII and modern in the F4U. They both have the same performance. Good (stable 72 FPS in VR) out to sea but terrible over land and at low altitude (40-50 FPS).

Been spending time over Guam for carrier ops, as the airfields will support legacy jets.

Fantastic terrain architecture.

Outstanding for the floor all bar-fights eventually end up on, or for NOE attack profiles.

But it still chunks.

Needs to be Lighter, like WWII Normandy.
