Hello folks,

Currently, I have a i5 10600K, RTX 3070 with 32 GB RAM, which gives me a solid 60FPS on my  pancake setup. I was quite content with it until I have made the switch and I purchased a Quest 3 a few months back and I can see that my rig is not sufficient for VR; I can get about 40 FPS at VR graphic preset with 1.1 PD.

So, I intend to get a new rig, and I am aiming for a safe 72 FPS to match my headset refresh rate, with DCS graphic settings at High and a PD of 1.5.

I am not after getting a top-of-the-line rig; I just need something good enough to meet my 72FPS@High@PD1.5 goal. I've been an Intel/Nvidia fan always, and I wish to stick with the Intel/Nvidia pair.

Cost is not a top concern.

What do you you guys recommend?

To start off with, I'm going to ignore your irrational constraints and give the actual best advice. Then later on I'll give the fanboy advice for the CPU.

For the GPU, a 5070 Ti should be able to about to hit your performance targets. A 5080 is going to have about 15% more headroom, but it probably going to cost a lot more than 15% extra. Check your local markets for the price difference and think about whether you want to spend the extra amount.

A 9800X3D or 7800X3D is going to be the best CPU. The 9800X3D seems to be much more overclockable, so it is probably worth the price difference.

The Intel option is a 14900, which is slower and runs way hotter & is thus much more problematic with cooling. You'll also be buying a motherboard with zero upgrade potential for the CPU, while an AM5 motherboard will get at least one more generation.

Of course you are free to make bad choices in life, but after already making the bad choice of getting the 10600 (a stopgap solution released because Intel couldn't get their 10 nm process working), do you really want to make another bad choice just because Intel used to do well for you?

PS. Get 64 GB of DDR5-6000

Adding to the advice above, which I agree with (Intel for gaming makes absolutely no sense right now) I'd say a PD of 1.5 is way too optimistic and well into placebo land. In my experience, and others of this forum, when going above 1.2 or 1.3 you rapidly start to see diminishing returns. Your mileage may vary.

And absolutely, get 64GB of RAM.

quick question. I'm not actively looking upgrade anytime soon but the AMD stuff is looking pretty neat. Regarding this post it was suggested that the 9800X3D is faster than 14900K. Which source did you use to arrive at this conclusion and about how much faster do you believe it would perform in DCS VR VS the 14900k?

Im also aware that your recommendation is also considering the issues some have reported with the intel CPU vs heat and degradation.

Thanks

I haven't compared with Intel but the 9800x3d is a monster. I played with overclocking when I first got it and got some very good results then realised I did not need to when paired with an rtx5080. I might need to when I get a 6090 though 😉
