Smashingnoobs Posted Tuesday at 05:44 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:44 PM (edited) Hey all, just got my super ultrawide last week and not happy. Let me know if any of you have experienced that same issues and if you solved them or not. For reference, im running a 9800x3d and a 5090 64gb ram. 1. In pimax home starry environment the sun and planet are not smooth circles but pointy like a dodecagon(pic attached). Anyone else? Pictured attached, although it very visible in the headset and does not look as bad in this picture but you kinda see it. 2. Very bad screen door effect in blue sky and clouds i can very clearly see the grid. For perspective, it is on par or even slightly worse if you can believe to my quest 3. 3. Lots of blurry text. in desktop view, scrolling web browsers is not clear, some game menus for example dcs setting menu is very unclear. None in the quest. 4. Chromatic aberrations before the newest update it was horrendous after the update its a little better but far from gone. Is it various places the one that comes to ming is the text on the in game multiplayer menus. None in the quest. 5.Shimmering around some text, and around the edges of in game and out of game objects. 6. Lots of distortions when moving my head around or side to side in game and out of game. 7. Feeling like there is always some smudging in my site even though the lenses are cleaned. seems to not always be in the same spot. 8. outer 30% of lense in alldirections seems very blurry. Not in the quest. 9. before the new update eye tracking didnt work at all. after the update it now works but everything outside of focus shimmers and distorts so bad its basically unusable. 10. i feel as though looking straight through the center precisely where there should be the most overlap, its hard to tell but i feel can see a fint outline of one of the lense borders. so when i look slightly left or right still mostly within what should be sweet spot there is some strange effect thats hard to describe but it breaks immersion. This does not happen in the quest either. In fact edge to edge clarity in the quest is far better than in the pimax. 11. More specifically for DCS. moving heads in any direction causes micro stutters its not fluid movement at all. And lots of artifacts and shimmering around begind other aircraft even some stationary objects. Render quality is set to 1.00. I have tried all the obvious things like position adjustment, IPD etc I opened a ticket with pimax on sunday night. they responded monday morning I responded and tried their suggestions within a few hours. its been more than 24 hours now and no response. I was expecting a response this morning. I have a 4-5 more days to decide whether to keep or return it. How much of this is normal for you guys? how much is settings related(I followed tally mouses and tried others as well with no improvement)? How much seems hardware related? Also random question more generally about VR but are you guys noticing a weird object at the very top of your vertical vision. as if your catching part of the helmet or something. I getting that in both quest and pimax and in the f-16 and f-18. I do not remember this previously (pic attached). I hate it Edited Tuesday at 07:31 PM by Smashingnoobs
Dunska Posted Wednesday at 01:25 AM Posted Wednesday at 01:25 AM (edited) I have many of those same symptoms, including my right eye seems out of focus no matter what I do. A friend also tried it and agrees the right eye is out of focus, so not just me. Bad CA and distortions, only 124 FOV (which is less than the normal 50pp, should be around 138 in the ultrawide). I also see what looks like glare, or as you said a smudge on the lenses in certain scenes, but they are clean. Support are sending me a normal 50ppd optical engine to replace the ultrawide, so we'll see how that goes. I also have a 9800X3D and 5090 and have been tweaking up my settings for the Crystal Super. I found the best options for me was to disable HAGS in Windows, set the headset to 90 Hz, High res (1.0) and set DCS to have an FPS cap of 90 fps as well. This smoothed things out quite a bit for me. I also run flat terrain shadows (makes a big difference to CPU/frame rate for a minimal visual hit to my eye). I also run mbucchia's Quad Views instead of the native Pimax QV - with 25% H and V size, -10 vertical offset, 125% foveated res and 5% peripheral res. No sharpening in Pimax Play or DCS, but 70 foveated sharpening in QV. Also no Turbo Mode in QV. Pays to check as Pimax Play defaults to 0.6 sharpening and mbucchia's QV default to Turbo Mode on. For the object at top of your view in the F/A-18 and F-16, that is the new visor/helmet 3d model from the latest DCS patch. Distracting and the colour dulls the visuals. I wish there was an option to disable it. You can toggle the visor up and down with a keybind, but with it up you don't get the JHMCS. Edited Wednesday at 01:29 AM by Dunska

Nice to know im not the only one. Did they offer to send the standard 50ppd or did you ask them for it? How long they say it will take? Did they let you keep the original in the meantime or you gotta send it back before? They haven't responded to me in 2 days. Hows the mura in yours btw? Is the grid very visible or is it ok? Gun Jam Posted Wednesday at 04:18 AM Posted Wednesday at 04:18 AM (edited) 1) I found the pimax home environment to be low quality its not a good tool to use for "how good is this headset" however it should be infocus. I have the standard 50ppd its actually really good looking. Im running a 4090. 2) If I look hard I can see SDE BUT... it might also be mura the two can be hard to tell apart as PPD increases. Sometimes It finds me by accident depending on the sky and lighting conditions but most of the time I have to look for it or I forget about it directly... I find it easy to ignore 3) I have no focus issues with or without the built in quadviews and ET. both left and right eyes are clear and the combined image (both eyes open) is clear text is clear 4) CA is limited in my case and non factor 5) nothing note worthy 6) I can see some warping if I really try but over all the profile is excellent 7) none to very low sometimes I fight with getting the headset in the sweetspot 8: Yes the outer 30% is degraded but I would not call it very blurry its not "excellent" thats for sure 9: eyetracking is absolutely excellent 0 issues calibrated once and its been spot on its very robust to changes in fit and eye relief. optically this sounds broken to me. High CA and blurry vision in one or both lens sounds like perhaps it got hammered in shipping knocking a lens out of alignment so light is no longer focused in on eye vs the other.. This would explain the blur and CA. 100% return it right now. You likley aren't going to fix this with software. I had the VR1 and had a similar experience as you are describing after getting the 50ppd super im like 90% sure the VR1 was broken (no way they all suck that bad) and I was proper ****** with no way to return it. I did get some money back for it on ebay so my lesson was never buy another VR system with no return policy. DO NOT miss the boat on this return, you have that option 100% take advantage of it right now! make them send you another one (a different one no repairs on this) and let Calvin know he is very helpful! As soon as I described my symptoms and all the things I had tried for troubleshooting, they offered to send the normal 50ppd as a replacement and I accepted. They extended my trial and said it would be extended to 7 days after I received the replacement module to allow me time to test. I keep the UW until I can test the new optical engine and decide to keep the Super or not. I used the online chat and support were very quick to respond. No ETA on the replacement optical engine though, so could be a while. Mura is present when looking at bright backgrounds like the sky and clouds. I can see a fine horizontal and vertical mesh/bars when moving my head around - annoying, yes, but I could probably overlook that if the picture was sharp, undistorted, had minimal CA and FOV was as advertised. I've been very happy with Pimax support responsiveness and willingness to resolve - I just hope the 50ppd is better and arrives soon.

I'm getting pretty pissed now. Its been almost 3 days since anyone responded to me. Live support tells there is not much they can do, its up to whoever reviews the tickets, tickets doesn't respond. I wrote a follow up email to complaints@pimax no response there either and as far as im aware they don't work Thursday through Sunday? So if I don't hear by tomorrow my trial is up Monday and I wont have a chance to try to work something out. I just have to go for the refund and honestly don't know if ill ever buy pimax again. I really wanted to like them. I heard the horror stories of quality control and customer service and I was a bit afraid going into this purchase. Really hope that doesn't end up being the case here.
Dunska Posted Thursday at 02:57 AM Posted Thursday at 02:57 AM Sorry to hear that mate You could try the chat in the PPlay client - that's what I used. Also, it wasn't Tech Support who extended the trial time, it was Customer Support - they took a few days to respond after Tech Support sent across the request for a replacement 50ppd module. 1
