PD919 Posted yesterday at 03:48 PM Posted yesterday at 03:48 PM I think it would be a great idea, but I think I would prefer a mini campaign for several warbirds instead of a singular one. Maybe to make it more thematic, have it only the American planes. The send off to the theater of war is the transition into one of your combat campaigns. I would be most interested in learning the engine management techniques of the P47 and F4U. The P51 spoils with its simplicity because of the auto cooling.
Jayhawk1971 Posted yesterday at 04:35 PM Posted yesterday at 04:35 PM I don't know if a whole campaign is even necessary, or if it couldn't be managed by one or two additional missions in future campaigns? I mean, most of the basic characteristics are probably covered by the module tutorial missions, I'd assume. And some of the more model-specific intricacies and procedures could be taught in an intro mission, or two. For example, the video you made about what Bud Anderson wrote in his book, about doing wheel landings instead of the doctrinal three-point landings, to expedite recovery operations. Those things could be taught in an intro mission. And players could then also apply those lessons when playing the older campaigns, as the knowledge is transferable. Or something along the lines of the Battle of Britain movie, where Robert Shaw's character takes the green pilot up for some combat lessons ("DAKA DAKA DAKA"). So, the player could join the squadron as a replacement, fresh out of advanced training and sent to either ETO or PTO, and has to get shown the ropes by the veterans? Another thought: IMO, rather than lessons about, say, engine management, warbird-specific, real world procedures and combat tactics might be more interesting/ necessary, because those are not being taught in the standard tutorials, nor in the manual. Don't get me wrong, I would very much welcome a training campaign. I just don't know if it's worth the effort if you could realize some of your other projects instead. Now, if DCS had WW2 Tonopah, and P-39's...... 2
Dragon1-1 Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago I'm all for the Hellcat basic training campaign. For other warbirds, there's YouTube tutorials. Maybe a Spitty or Mossie training somewhere down the line, but as far as the US goes, the Hellcat sounds perfect. 1

JD Swann Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago Unlike the rest of you guys I would love a full training campaign for the F6F. I think it could represent Operational Training, the last phase of training before a new US Navy pilot joined the fleet in WW2. This was when they first flew the aircraft type they would use in combat. Some things the campaign could include: - Aircraft familiarization. - Takeoff, landing, and field operations. - Formation flying. - Navigation, over land and water (including dead reckoning and YE/ZB). - Air combat maneuvering. - Section tactics (Thach weave). - Carrier qualifications. Everybody thinks they know how to do these things but I would love an immersive campaign that teaches how to do them right. And, based on his previous training campaigns, I this Reflected is just the guy to make it. 1
