Static Outpost placement and rotation

When placing an outpost I used to be able to zoom in and see it on the map thus allowing me to orientate and place it accurately on the road, for some reason that doesn’t happen now and zoom just shows the symbol which makes placing statics impossible. I must be doing something wrong, thoughts?

At bottom of the screen there should be icons that will let you switch between model and symbol for units.  Watch that you don't hit the "watch" as that turns on historic mode and may limit your unit/aircraft selections.
