Aeroscout Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Ok, that's exactly what I meant. So, nothing changes. It's the design, and while it's good in many ways, it is flawed, IMO. Personally I would argue that this issue is more important than new water textures or new 3d water, but who cares about what I say. And it's not like we should really care about water anyway, it's not like 3/4 of the wold is covered in it... oh wait... :D Aero DCS Wishlist: 1) FIX THE DAMN RIVERS!!! 2) Spherical or cylindrical panorama view projection. 3) Enhanced input options (action upon button release, etc). 4) Aircraft flight parameter dump upon exit (stick posn, attitude, rates, accel, control volume, control-surface positions, SAS bias, etc). 5) ADS-33 maneuver courses as static objects. 6) Exposed API or exports of trim position and stick force for custom controllers. 7) Select auto multiple audio devices
EvilBivol-1 Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 (edited) I understand you're joking, but it's not about caring or not caring for features or user feedback. It's about the difficulty of changing fundamental design principles of the code. Replacing the water special effect is easier and therefore can be done sooner. Replacing the terrain engine or at least the way it calculates water bodies is not easy and will take longer. Whether it was a poor design choice or not is probably debatable. Users always complain about performance and FPS issues. Considering the time when this engine was originally designed and the available computer horsepower at the time, rendering water under the earth was the most efficient solution in terms of performance, but it also results in some peculiar issues, such as the one you describe. It's all a matter of balancing performance and visual quality and it is a balance which every rendering engine seeks to conform to. All engines have compromises. Today, a better solution may certainly be found for calculating and rendering water bodies using more modern technologies, but it will take time for the engine to advance and take advantage of these. Steps toward this are being taken constantly and with every update to the software, but again, the specifics of what and when are difficult to estimate even for us. norm Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 will this install as part of black shark, or will it be separate, with its own icon etc?
Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Thanks for the explanation, GG. It's just that we could get some better FPS if there wasn't water all over the place. Still, maybe all FPS we'd get would be lost by the computer calculating where do you do and don't have water. The conclusion is obvious: I need a better graphics card :D
GGTharos Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 ^^^^ I think that might be a reasonable conclusion ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
EvilBivol-1 Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 The conclusion is obvious: I need a better graphics card :D Another option is to set the water parameter to '0' in the options.lua file and simply have it as a texture, which might be the best solution for FPS. ;) - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Then my eyes can't afford it. I can't live without the waves and everything else, so sometimes I have to deal with a decrease in FPS. Still, nothing to worry about, never got to unplayable levels. Sometimes, and only sometimes, I get some stuttering, but it's rare, anyway... Might just be related to the level I've set to anisotropic filtering (8 ) and antialiasing (16xQ). Exaggerated, but looks nice in-game :music_whistling:
talisman Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 You know, i read these posts and i still cant believe that we are so lucky, after using simulations like M$ flight sim etc.. I think it is amazing that not only is there such a huge community centered around ED, but that they are active and take such an interest. After years of faceless development - i just love ED's attitude to the people who buy their products. We really are lucky indeed. Keep up the good work.
