The river escort mission

So, I'm going my first real combat mission. The escort one along the river. How do I get my wingman to engage the enemy? Since there are no vehicles all he does is fly untill he gets hit by a SAM. Also, what is the best way for taking out enemies you really can not see? I've just been spraying the areas I see tracers foming from with HE cannon rounds. Only get a couple kills. Rockets are pretty much useless it would seem on infantry. Please point me in the right direction. I will figure the rest out from there. Thanks.

after reading those, my only real options are lables or keep spraying rounds into the trees. I really don't want to mess with LOD and have black blobbs all over the place. Guess I'll just keep practicing.
