Caspet Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Hi Is there any way to lock/toggle the collective brake on/off. I find iI have to keep the button i've assigned on my throttle pressed in to maintain level altitude when I have the altituded hold enabled (The overhead panel light is on). Any ideas? thanks:) Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee Muhammad Ali-(Cassius Clay) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
ZaltysZ Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 First, wrong forum (no collectives in LockOn) :) Second, you are doing something wrong. Altitude hold does not work at all when collective brake button is pressed (it is the second function of that device). It is likely that you are using radar altitude hold mode and your helicopter is moving/drifting over rough surface, so autopilot constantly adjusts altitude to keep precise distance from surface as you told him by releasing brake button. Use barometric altitude hold and it won't move up/down constantly while not in perfect hover. Wir sehen uns in Walhalla.
Caspet Posted February 11, 2010 Author Posted February 11, 2010 (edited) God im such a twat:doh: clicked on the wrong forum(had just got out of bed). Ignore me :music_whistling:. ps thanks for the advice though ZaltysZ I think you've answered my question! isoul Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Is there any way to lock/toggle the collective brake on/off. I find iI have to keep the button i've assigned on my throttle pressed in to maintain level altitude when I have the altituded hold enabled (The overhead panel light is on). Any ideas? First of all Collective Brake isn't a switch or function you enable or disable. AFAIK, in real life its a lever you have to press in order to move Collective up or down. Instead of that you can just disengage ALT HOLD. There are two types of altimeters : 1) Barometric Altimeter - Uses atmospheric pressure to determine the height. The height measured is actually the vertical distance from seal level(zero altitude) to a given point(where the barometer stands). 2) Radar Altimeter - Uses radio-wave signals(which bounce on the ground) to determine the distance from the ground beneath you. If you want to maintain the same (barometric) altitude, or just level flight, you : 1) Set ALT HOLD on 2) Set Altimeter Switch to Baro (means Barometric) 3) Use Collective Brake at desired altitude 4) Let alone the Collective stick *) Dangerous when flying low at mountainous areas. If you want to maintain the same radar altitude, which means your flight level will follow the morphology of the ground below, you 1) Set ALT HOLD on 2) Set Altimeter Switch to radar 3) Use Collective Brake at desired altitude 4) Let alone the Collective stick *) Useful when flying NoE.
26-J39 Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 As isoul mentions the collective brake IRL needs to be squeezed to move collective, in DCS there is no need to hold collective brake while adjusting collective as it is not modeled. In DCS the "collective brake"has a double function, to set a new alt for the Alt Hold AP. Maybe IRL when you release the collective brake new alt parameters are set for the Alt Hold AP hence why "collective brake" and "set new alt" are using the same function. AFAIK the only modeling of the collective brake in DCS is the animation on the collective stick in the cockpit. :)
ZaltysZ Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 In DCS, if you press "F" and hold it, autopilot will stop holding altitude. If you release it, autopilot will begin holding new altitude at which helicopter is at the moment of release. If you move collective without holding "F" and altitude hold channel is on, you will be fighting the autopilot. For example, if you increase collective, autopilot will automatically neglect that until you overwhelm its operation range of 20%. So, you can get more responsive collective without altitude hold channel turned on or with it, but with pressed "F". Wir sehen uns in Walhalla.
Caspet Posted February 12, 2010 Author Posted February 12, 2010 Thanks for your help everyone. I have the hard back manual and it sort of mentions it but its not too clear. Thanks to you guys I think i get it now. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee Muhammad Ali-(Cassius Clay) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
