The Flying Goose Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Tonight I was flying the Clear Tkvarcheli mission. As those of you who know the mission might know, after eliminating some of the enemy, an OH-58 pops up to attack the FARP. At that point the friendly russian forces start launching strela missiles at the helo. I being my fun loving self (:P) decided to go in with guns old school style. Just then I'm in a fireball and going down fast. I manged to pause at the explosion and take some screens. Sure enough as I knew there were no enemy air defences near by and it was the Strela who shot me down. So my point/ question is, is am I just that unlucky or is this realistic for the missile to momentarily lose lock on the Kiowa and then take lock on poor ol' me? if any thing it's a funny story and the pics tell a story themself. and by the way, the last pic is of the Kiowa with gun and ammo belt, but does where the ammo comes out of (the boxy thing) look right? Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz, Sapphire 5870, TM Warthog, 4 GB RAM, Windows 7
ARM505 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Yes, an IR guided non-commanded missile could do that, but what I really want to know is what on earth is going on with that Kiowa? Why is it's ammo container floating around in space next to it?! Shouldn't it be inside or something?

Why is it's ammo container floating around in space next to it?! Shouldn't it be inside or something? It is a code bug. AlphaOneSix Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 (edited) That's where the ammo container goes, it's just supposed to be attached to something. ;) EDIT: It looks like that graphic was designed for the other side of the aircraft. The ammo can attaches to the side of the aircraft. Edited February 17, 2010 by AlphaOneSix
isoul Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 ... So my point/ question is, is am I just that unlucky or is this realistic for the missile to momentarily lose lock on the Kiowa and then take lock on poor ol' me? if any thing it's a funny story and the pics tell a story themself. I think this is possible. For example, if someone fired a SA-7 (which is somewhat old technology) at the Kiowa and you happened to pass between the missile and the Kiowa exhaust ports, there is a strong possibility the missile will be distracted by your exhaust ports and follow you instead...
zdXu Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 (edited) 2 friendly SA-6-missiles looses control and turns to my position. I am certain that the proximity-fuse of the SA-6-missiles were activated because of "my" friendly KA-50(where i was sitting in). But i am not certain that the flight-route of the missiles was intended to come exactly to my position. Green circle is my position (not always shown up in all pictures) Black circle is the target of the missiles (i think it was a F18 6 or more km away) Red circles are the 2 russian SA-6 missiles And note: i was hovering at 10 altitude with a speed of 10 km. I was definitely not flying into the flight-route of these missiles. Missile-start Missile starting, another point of view The "w"-thing is the nose of the missile Missile is still on course Missile approaches to my position Missile near me, distance to me is here i think ca. 200 meter Distance to the exploding warhead of the 1. missile was here i think ca. 50 - 60 meter. Warhead-weight: 59 kg, that's a lot... Edited February 17, 2010 by zdXu
The Flying Goose Posted February 17, 2010 Author Posted February 17, 2010 Thanks guys for all of this. Just my luck I'd get in the way:doh:. Also, about the Kiowa you're probably right about it being designed to go on the other side, AlphaOneSix. It sure is weird lookin though :disgust: (<- JK lol) Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz, Sapphire 5870, TM Warthog, 4 GB RAM, Windows 7
