Kaptn Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 First off - my hat goes off to anyone who has ever done this for real. I have yet to successfully complete a deep penetration mission. I fly in with my laser off, lights off, ETC.. This is not a problem. Once on station I light up like a Xmas tree. I order my wingman (cannon fodder) to attack ground forces then I try to sort out my primary targets. Long story short.. My wingman doesn't last very long and i'm usually ejecting before he does. I have searched DCS forums and looked for actual military strategy docs for information on this subject. I have tried the sneaky popup from behind higher ground approach and the rambo style fast in fast out attacks. I almost had one in the bag but got nailed during the egress. if anyone has any tips, suggestions and knowledge of these types of missions could you please share? Kaptn Posted February 27, 2010 Author Posted February 27, 2010 (edited) Haha - definitely not the case Im talking about some scripted missions in the campaign. I've had a few of them so far. Let me rephrase... What I know: Terrain masking Low electronic signature Flare management Could anyone give me some other tips on survivability? Speed Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Go slowly, use the terrain to your advantage. Try to find somewhere to observe target areas and potential enemy ambush positions from standoff range. 1 Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility. Kaptn Posted February 27, 2010 Author Posted February 27, 2010 (edited) Speed - Go Slowly is key I found out in my last replay. I finally finished one by taking my time and observing the battlefield just after the defensive positions. Taking out the targets of opportunity along my flight path was key. Thanks for the constructive reply. Damn I wish the KA50 had a radar.... mattag08 Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Best thing is to go slow and use the Vikhr's range to take out any AAA/SAM emplacements you can find. However, in some missions you'll come up against SAMs you can't outrange so you have to use terrain to your advantage and execute a pop-up attack quickly enough to kill it and then drop down before any missiles it launched can hit. Single MANPADs hidden in forests can be a pain in the rear as well. Only decent strategy sometimes is to fly high and slow and let them shoot at you (so you know where they are), dump flares and run and then engage them from the edge of your range. General tips: Most SAMs cannot outrange you, but will fire within about 6km so you have to spot them before they're in range. The ones that do out range you are extremely deadly. If you get a laser ping that you didn't expect (IFVs shooting TOWs for instance). Then dive and turn for the nearest terrain because a SAM is probably ranging you for a shot or is actively guiding a missile. Most IFVs will open fire under 5km. TOW missiles are easy to dodge though, just generate enough lateral speed that the missile cannot track (usually about 50kph perpendicular to the missile's flight is enough). IFV guns can be devastating, so never fly head-on into an IFV at an altitude where its turret can traverse upward to you. Tanks will fire under 2km. You should never get this close to a tank, there simply is no reason. The 12.7mm or .50 cals on these things are bad enough, and then there's the main cannon which will knock you out in one hit. Rifle-equipped infantry will fire about 1km. Usually not an issue, but they can get a lucky hit on critical systems, so don't risk it. Stay away and use the cannon to make quick work of infantry. Speed Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Oh yea, as you fly around, you need to keep your "scan" going- keep looking out the windows, at stuff all around you. You might spot a threat or an incoming missile- these things sometimes pop up at positions other than your 12 o clock :) A Track IR is incredibly useful for this, as is using the zoom function (/ and * on the numpad). Alot of your target spotting should be done visually, but the Shkval is still useful, especially if you're going down a valley with less area to search. If you're in an area with long sight distances, you're probably going to want to hug the terrain as searching the huge area extensively for threats may be impractical. Also, just pulling into a hover before flying across an area and searching it extensively with the Shkval before crossing is INVALUBLE!
