tigertoo Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Hi all probabily something i do wrong: A-10: low level (200 ft), engaging LAlt 5 (radar altitude): plane goes slightly up and down, approaching a high building: plane goes steeply upwards and keeps that way, so does not return to 200 ft: normal? F-15:in a valley, engaging LAlt 5 (radar altitude): plane approaches a mountain and crashes into it, so does not climb upwards the mountain:normal? Thank you for reading this
Nate--IRL-- Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 IIRC the radar altitude doesn't read the terrain altitude ahead, only the terrain directly below the aircraft. It can't see the mountain in front of you, so you crash. As for the A-10, that just sounds weird, it should return to the set altitude. Moa Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Also remember that radar altitude increases with roll angle of the aircraft (by a factor of 1/cos(roll angle) for those mathematically inclined). A radar altimeter will read 41% more than the actual altitude at a 45 degree angle of bank (that is, your altitude is 70% of the value indicated on your display). At 90 degree angle of bank your radar reports max altitude yet your actual altitude could be any value (including zero). Barometric altitude is not affected by this effect, but has less precise measurements and is affected by changes in atmospheric conditions.

Why is it, when you lock up the Tornado on A2A radar, the IFF says IDS GR3. There was never a IDS GR3 version???
