Sel94 Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 (edited) I was looking around and found this: So, recently there has been a security exploit with Adobe Flash/Reader/Acrobat that could lead to an unauthorized user gaining access to your computer. A lot of us use these products everyday (for Youtube, PDF files, etc.), and considering how Adobe doesn't have a patch yet I thought I'd warn you guys about this. Bear in mind this doesn't affect Acrobat/Reader 8.x, so if you have these versions you're safe. The bug affects all flash players except the new release candidate. Adobe did list some methods to reduce the impact, and I'll post them here (with step by step instructions) If anyone wants to see Adobe's bulletin, click here. Minimizing impact on Adobe Flash As of right now there is no patch, but you can download the release candidate which Adobe states that it "does not appear to be vulnerable". To download click here and choose your OS. There is 1 more method that involves HTML5. This is only for Youtube, so if you avidly use this website, check this out. Join the Youtube HTML5 beta, and your videos will no longer be played with Flash, just remember to have a compatible web browser. Minimizing impact with Reader/Acrobat The affected file for Reader/Acrobat is "authplay.dll". Somehow hackers can use this with Reader/Acrobat to get through to your system. The only solution is to either delete it or remove access to it. I'd recommend deleting it. REMEMBER THAT THIS DOESN'T AFFECT READER/ACROBAT 8.x, SO CHECK YOUR VERSION! 1. Anyways, to delete it go to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\" for Adobe Reader or "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\" for Adobe Acrobat. 2. Then find the file "authplay.dll" and delete it. When Adobe releases a patch you can restore it from the recycling bin or w/e. If anybody uses a Mac or Linux, please tell me how to find those files on them. Remember that you can't open up .PDF files after doing this. All in all, stay safe on the internet. I'd recommend taking these steps as you're better safe than sorry. This was not written by me, I just found it and thought it would be helpful. Edited June 6, 2010 by Sel94
