Can anyone point me in the direction of the mission file that is used for the training missions? I'd like to be able to take off from the same location, fly around a bit and then nail some of the targets around the training ground. Kinda like a 'free flight' training mission.

Is this possible or would I have to create one from the mission editor (not exactly proficient at doing that just yet ;) )

Mission editor is pretty easy to use. Here's a quick run down that'll give you something to shoot:

Open the editor up and find an airfield, they're pretty easy to identify. Next put some enemies somewhere near by. To do this just hit the tank button, set the country to Russia (or whatever, something not US since you don't want to kill your own guys), click the mouse where you want that unit. The window is still open (if not click on your newly placed unit). Next select unit type. I'd say stick with something like a Ural or UAZ because they're unarmed. Go for a BRDM if you want more of a challenge, they have guns. Stay away from anything that shows a blue circle as that's the blue circle of death and you probably don't want to deal with that (it's an AAA or SAM unit).

Now for the hog. Push the airplane button and click the mouse on the airfield you want. On the options side switch the plane to an A-10 and the AI to "player" (it should be a list that says different AI difficulties like rookie and such). There are a few more things you can play with here but look down towards 'waypoints' or something like that. There's a menu with a few buttons inside the menu for the airplane itself and this will let you set multiple things. This first menu is for waypoints. Set the current waypoint (where you placed your plane) to "Take off from runway" or "Take off from ramp" if you want to go through all the start up. Next click next to the enemy. A big line should have appeared and this should be your second waypoint. If not then click the airplane you put in game, look at the waypoint controls, click "add" then click next to the enemy. Now click back over by the airfield to add another waypoint, set it to "landing".

OK, so that's done, now you'll need some stuff to drop on the enemy. One of those buttons on that little menu inside the plane menu allows you to select armament. I think it looks like a crosshair but I can't remember. Just click through until you find it, you won't hurt anything and you'll know when you see it because a giant gray airplane with armament loadouts will be where the map was. Just select whichever looks like the most fun. Go ahead and switch out of that menu so you can see the map again.

Hit the save button and name it something. That's it, you're ready to fly! Hit the blue checkmark and have at it. Steerpoint 2 is the point by the enemy. It's in the air though so if you want to be able to use your FLIR to automatically point to the enemy I think you have to set its altitude to ground level. Not 100% how to do this, I guess just give it an altitude of 0 in the editor.

Oh and with that enemy, there's something that says like 1 OF 1. It's two boxes side by side. If you click the right arrow (I think) of the box to the right you can spawn another enemy that will be part of the same group! The box will then say something like 2 OF 2. It can be a different enemy so you can have a Ural and then click that button and change the next guy into a UAZ. To select the Ural again, click the left button for the left box. The box should then say 1 OF 2. Oh and you can add waypoints like you did for the plane if you want these guys moving.

Hope this helps. The mission editor is pretty intuitive so I think you'll get it figured out pretty quick.

Mate you are a legend! It took me about 5 mins to create a training mission from Batumi to Koboleti with a whole raft of weapons to try out!

As you say, it's quite intuitive once you get in to it.

Here's a very quick and dirty mission I just created, if anyone is interested (completely untested, and as I'm a noob to mission compilation I will not be held responsible!!! Although any constructive criticism will be gladly received :D)

Thanks again MFID

Off to add a ramp start version to my training mission(s)...
