amagad Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 Hi all, I have a p4 2.4 ghz and a asus p4s8x-x motherboard. When i try to overclock my p4 2.4 to 2.6 or 2.7 it tends to overheat a lot and my system eventually crashes after a couple of minutes. My question is: If i buy a good heatsink (I was looking at a gygabite heatsink for $47 on newegg) will i be able to overclock past 2.7? When i try pass 2.7 with my current settings my comp wont even start up , it will crash before starting windows. So , will i be able to overclock pass 2.7 with a good heatsink , and how far do you think i can go? just give me an estimate. Thanks P.D: I cant afford a new cpu now so dont tell me too, lol Win xp sp1 p4 2.4 ghz geforce 6800, 128 1gb ddr CH products trackIR3 Asus P4S8X-X motherboard , up to 3.0 ghz cpu and 3.0 gb ram Asus P7P55D Pro Intel i7 @ 4.0 GHZ 8gb xms ddr3 memory 500gb SATA HD ATI 5870 27" Dell LCD Monitor Thermaltake Black Widow 850W HOTAS WartHog Thrustmaster MFD's 8" lcd monitors x2 (mfd) Saitek Cyborg Keyboard TrackIR5
britgliderpilot Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 You need an overclocking forum. Try this one: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/ Actually, try and search that one first - you don't know what kind of response you'll get if you turn up and ask a question you could have found the answer to on the second page :) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg
Hitman IF Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 If you can't afford a new CPU, then you definitely shouldn't be overclocking the one you've got to the point where you can't start the PC. That's asking for trouble. As you will see from the link britgliderpilot gave you, overclocking is usually rather more complicated than sticking on a good heatsink. ---SVBS squad is playing Lock On, ADF/TAW and Typhoon now at www.svbs.co.uk !---
coldcrew Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 rgr. If you can't afford a new cpu the last thing you want to do is do anything to wreck the old one, especially for minimal speed gains.
Pilgrim Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 Prescotts are notorious for their high heat. So just putting a large heatsink won't help you much. If you want to do some real overclocking it I suggest something from http://www.asetek.com/ I run the waterchill KT03A-L20/DUAL 80mm. It rocks. I have oc'd my cpu from 3.06 to 3.45 w/o problems.
