JaseGill Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Guys and girls (well I'm guessing a few lady simmers are here), I have to say I'm amazed by my 1st week with the Thrustmaster Warthog. I previously had a Cougar for a long time (from day one of its release) until a few months ago when I bought a G940 hoping that FF was what I needed to get properly into Black Shark. Then I saw the WH pre-release hype and figured that was what it was, hype, as I cant say my Cougar particularly inspired my sim flying. the Warthog is another beast altogether. I'm usually one for fixed wing and loved FC and FC2 but I just could've fly the aircraft properly (and I'm a qualified PPL and have stick time from my RAF days in Gazelle, Puma, Sea King, Merlin, Tornado, Tucano, Hawk and Tiger Moth - I was lucky and spent my last few years in the RAF at Boscombe Down and got to fly all sorts with some of the best instructors I could ever imagine, you gotta love test pilots!). So to say I wasn't hoping for much is overstating it a bit. Well Im here to say I was wrong, its amazing. Before now I couldn't get into a stable hover in the Black Shark and actual types I have flown when flown in MS Flight Simulator X were just pigs. Now, I fly the Black Shark like I was taught to fly helicopters hardly even touching the stick, just lightly guiding it. Fixed wind I can fly circuits like I do in Real Life and half the time better. I'd even say the time in MSFSX has made me a better Real Life PPL. I had dumped Black Shark as un-flyable (even with FF) and had almost given up on most of my simming. Now, I'm back with a vengeance. All that is missing is seat of the pants stuff, which I don't ever expect to get without a full commercial motion controlled simulation rig that's way out of my price range. So, thank you Thrustmaster for re-igniting my flying of Sims (please fix the TARGET software pronto so that I can start on some Black Shark configs) and I just cant wait for the final release of A10C to get my hands on an old favourite from FC2. The Beta 2 is great, I just wish it had the graphics optimisation that Black Shark has which is giving me a steady 50-60 FPS. J. CrashEd Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Really good to hear a review from a real-world pilot. It's interesting what you said about BS - I got so frustrated trying to fly BS with my old Cougar that I gave up in the end. Now that the Beta for A-10C is out I haven't had a chance to fly BS, but having read this I think I'll give it a go this weekend
Succellus Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Yeah i quited BS too, i though i was too mediocre to have what i call real control over the shark. I what you say is half true i ll be a happy tard when my pig lands home. And yeah very good to have some people with stick time ride (on the right meaning) saying TM warthog is awesome ! Well so many people sayd it IS awesome some part of it got to be true. HaF 922, Asus rampage extreme 3 gene, I7 950 with Noctua D14, MSI gtx 460 hawk, G skill 1600 8gb, 1.5 giga samsung HD. LawnDart Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 @JaseGill, Good to hear about DCS: BS! How long were you in the RAF? @CrashEd & Succellus, There have been reviews and feedback from real life pilots all along. :smilewink: Here's one review from Ray back in June (using the beta units at E3). I haven't written one myself, and people tend to not want to listen to our 2c because we're testing for TM... but ask away if there's anything anyone's wondering. Btw, some of the best pilots I know don't fly IRL - this community has some very talented folks for sure! Back on topic though, the Warthog is certainly a masterpiece. Just an awesome HOTAS... :joystick: My FSSB Kitty is being retired.:pilotfly: [sigpic]http://www.virtualthunderbirds.com/Signatures/sig_LD.jpg[/sigpic] Virtual Thunderbirds, LLC | Sponsored by Thrustmaster Corsair 750D Case | Corsair RM850i PSU | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS X CODE | 32GB Corsair DDR4 3200 | Intel i7-8086K | Corsair Hydro H100i v2 Cooler | EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW | Oculus Rift | X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty | Samsung SSD 970 EVO 1TB NVMe | Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB | WD Caviar Black 2 x 1TB | TM HOTAS Warthog | TM Pendular Rudder | TM MFD Cougar Pack | 40" LG 1080p LED | Win10 |
JaseGill Posted November 6, 2010 Author Posted November 6, 2010 Lawdart, I did 12 years and had some good times, good tours and made some good friends (buried a few of them too unfortunately). You're right, it seems there are some very talented people on here and in the Sim world. in don't know any other places with such dedicated people online. The talent of the modders, the developers and the whole community is really something to be admired. J. All my hours are civilian (mostly airline), but I have several military friends and colleagues... and you certainly speak the truth about everything being community driven in this genre! Succellus Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 @ lawdart. Your right i don t trust must reviewer from the company of from revue, or indirect relation to the industry. It s kind of asking the thief if he robbed something. Most people dont bash the milk cow, be it for money or 15mn of fame. I use to trust some reviewer but they got lenient and crappy games get excelent reviews while interesting ones get bad reviews. By the way... you have a killing machine... I use to trust some reviewer but they got lenient and crappy games get excelent reviews while interesting ones get bad reviews. I generally wait for reviews and feedback from the greater community before I buy things too, so I completely understand where you're coming from. I'd probably do the same in your shoes... That said, it should be quite obvious we haven't been pulling wool over anyone's eyes with what we've said prior to the launch of the HW. It's a great HOTAS, and most reviews thus far confirm the same things we've been saying! Even the cons are very similar to the feedback we've given TM for suggested improvements. Lastly, several of the VTB members have more time flying real airplanes than flightsims, which is part of what we inevitably end up comparing the HW to while flying with it. It's definitely in a league of its own. By the way... you have a killing machine... Yessir, recent upgrade! :D [sigpic]http://www.virtualthunderbirds.com/Signatures/sig_LD.jpg[/sigpic] Virtual Thunderbirds, LLC | Sponsored by Thrustmaster Corsair 750D Case | Corsair RM850i PSU | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS X CODE | 32GB Corsair DDR4 3200 | Intel i7-8086K | Corsair Hydro H100i v2 Cooler | EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW | Oculus Rift | X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty | Samsung SSD 970 EVO 1TB NVMe | Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB | WD Caviar Black 2 x 1TB | TM HOTAS Warthog | TM Pendular Rudder | TM MFD Cougar Pack | 40" LG 1080p LED | Win10 |
Succellus Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 Tose 12 GB 1600 does a diference, i mean i m about to assemble my I7-950, 1500GB 7500 rpm HD (dont relly need that much), Asus extreme 3 gene, MSI 460GTX hawk, 4 GB 1600 Gskill ram. I am still wondering if 4 more gb of ram would benefit the system. HaF 922, Asus rampage extreme 3 gene, I7 950 with Noctua D14, MSI gtx 460 hawk, G skill 1600 8gb, 1.5 giga samsung HD.
