Pfadfinder Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Thanks to this guy Kinect can be used on Windows 7 PCs: http://nuigroup.com/forums/viewthread/11154/ sounds very impressiv to me, could be a very cool alternative for track ir! WynnTTr Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I don't think so. Kinect is more expensive than TrackIR 5 and is tons bigger. What are you going to be playing sitting down in front of your computer monitor? Hardly the exercise/dance games that are specifically wrtten for Kinect. I doubt the camera is going to be as responsive as TrackIR with full 6DOF too. Then there's the problem of trying to scotch tape that big thing on top of your monitor. So why pay more for something that's bigger, probably won't be as smooth or responsive for what you want to be replacing... ie, TrackIR and 6DOF. If Kinect was at least half the price and half the size maybe.
Revvin Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I wonder if the face tracking done by the likes of the Kinect unit and Playstation Eye camera will be where Naturalpoint takes their next product. There is already a face tracking API available for the PC and it would do away with the need for additional devices mounted on headsets and caps etc, perhaps their next product won't be hardware at all just software that can be used with a regular webcam. 1
hassata Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I'm also thinking along those lines. There's facetrack, which is free and apparently is working well with provided you have a higher-res camera. So I think it's a no-brainer that NP will go in that direction0pretty much the reason I'm holding of upgrading for right now. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

I'm of the view that if you wait for the next upgrade, you'd never buy anything. Besides, I reckon it'd be at least another year (minimum) until something like Facetrack is as reliable as TrackIR and sold commercially. Just get it now and upgrade to whatever's new later - you don't know when that next upgrade will be. You could be waiting for quite a while. And spending $150-200 per year on your hobby is a damn cheap hobby.
Revvin Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I'm still happy with my TrackIR 3 with vector clip, having just done a small upgrade on my PC I had thought about upgrading to a TrackIR 5 but I don't feel I'd get enough of a benefit to justify the cost when my current TrackIR works well. I also wonder if Naturalpoint could be working on something like Facetrack as the TrackIR 5 has been out a while now.
