I have just been reading the Mission Editor manual, I thought the aircraft was complicated - the Mission Editer is definately on par with it

Can anyone point me to a tutorial to create a 'simple' mission where I can take off, bomb something then land again. Hopfully from this I will be able to gain some knowledge and dig deeper into the more advanced areas of this utility as time goes on.

This is a too complex thing to explain it in one posting.

Learning by doing is the best method.

Just add some ground units for the enemy coallition and a US-A-10c with Skill: Player or Client, a good payload and set the first waypoint to "Takeoff from ramp", so you will start on a airport.

I've just had a go at creating my first 'very simple' mission. It was a two ship tour around the mountains where I placed a couple of tanks and AAA.

After I saved the mission, I loaded it up for some tank bashing only to find the engines already running (it should have been a ramp start ), pressing F1 wouldn't let me into the cockpit, then they started taxiing by themselves. It finally dawned on me I forgot to select Pilot 1 as 'Player' and left it as AI.

Anyway I decided to sit back and watch. After take off they cruised at 270 knts and 7500 ft, then I realised my second mistake, the mountains are about 9000 ft ...luckily they just managed to skim over the top. They made short work of the tanks and AAA with Mavericks before continuing back to the airfield.

Pilot 1 though didn't quite make one of the mountains on the way home and crashed into the side of the mountain.

This is just a short guide on how NOT to create a mission in the Mission Editor

I'm trying to figure out how to have a wingman or flight and have them follow my commands. I can get them to fly with me, but they go off on their own. I'll find it unless someone has a short explanation of a key word to look for

I've spent a LOT of quality time in the Beta ME. I'm a bit rushed ATM but will try to figure out the best way to help you out. Sometimes it's easier to do than describe, that's the problem. If you post specific questions here I will try to answer them.

How about a video on YouTube? I did some for Falcon 4AF's mission builder. I'd certainly be interested in viewing them.

The problem with that is -- correct me if I'm wrong -- I don't think you can record ME activity in FRAPS or similar program. It would have to be done as a series of screenshots.

That's exactly what I was looking for - thanks for the link :)

Seems to be lots of flying video's but not much on the mission editor which seems to be just as complicated.

Thanks

You're quite correct as I found out the hard way about FRAPS.

It'll record the live action but not the mission building. I had to use two free progs to do them. One to record the 'lesson' and another one to reduce the size of the file to a size fit for YouTube.

I'll put the program names in when I look on my main PC where they reside later on.

Experiment to your hearts content. Come up with an idea and try to build it. Try to start small and as you get stuff working let it snowball into a more complex idea. For instance I spent a TON of time building purely AI scenarios and I watched em play out. I would start with land only units advancing on a position and would keep changing group composition, positions, waypoints, and other details until I got the battle to play out as I wanted.

Also try to figure out as much as you can with AI before moving onto triggers. Triggers let you expand the capability of the editor 10 fold but without the basics of unit and waypoint placement it would be kinda hard to 'put it all together'.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

I've been having trouble with the Mission Editor learning curve too. Something I would suggest that I am doing is open an instant mission in the mission editor and give it a new name (save as). Then go in and make some modest changes, look at the various parameters and what they do, add a few tanks in a tight group - so they are easy to hit, change your weapons loadout, etc. Fly the mission, make some more changes. repeat.

As you get more comfortable with the editor add a refueling track, change the time from day to night, add additional flight groups, etc.

OK I used CamStudio to record the video lesson and Handbrake to reduce the video to YouTube size. Both are free software.

Flaming Cliffs has a very good Mission Editor guide in its official documentation. It's essentially the same ME as A-10's with the exception of A-10's overhauled trigger/AI system. By using the FC ME manual in conjunction with the guide to the new trigger/AI system provided with A-10, you'll be up to speed with the A-10 ME in no time.

The ME for this series of sims is a powerful, relatively easy to use and satisfying scenario design tool but it has its quirks and the only way to navigate around these -- with the help of the above-cited docs --is to dive in, starting with simple tutorial missions and building up to larger-scale conflicts.
